libgphoto2, gtkam, sane-backends, xsane

April 26, 2008 — BarryK
libgphoto2
I have upgraded to version 2.4.1

gtkam
Upgraded to version 0.1.15. I am very happy -- finally gtkam works with my digital camera! I have been waiting a long time for this. It is quite a long time since there have been new versions of libgphoto2 and gtkam.

I have a Fuji Finepix A610, which does not have a standard USB mass storage interface, but it does have a PCT Bridge interface. With the previous version of gtkam, it partly worked, I was able to view thumbnails, but that was as far as it got before gtkam crashed. The new version is stable, and I was able to not just view thumbnails, but also extract and save the full images. The built-in image viewer only displays a black rectangle, so it isn't perfect, but good enough. This has now become a must-have for me and has to be in the live-CD.

sane-backends
Upgraded to version 1.0.19.

xsane
Upgraded to version 0.995.

Should there be an RC1?

"Barry, I know this comment is not going to be a very popular one, but the number and scope of changes made (most untested) to beta 2 really suggests there be one release candidate prior to final. You've been working fast and furious, and we are all behind you 100%. But the untested changes made since beta 1 could mean trouble for 4 final. Believe me, I don't want to wait either. But THE WORLD is going to notice and love Puppy 4.0 - it's got to be as solid as a rock. An RC1 would require just a week or two. I invite everyone's thoughts on the subject.

"Oh yes, I already realised that there has to be at least one RC. Normally with a beta release I would have frozen everything, just fixing bugs, but in this case there have been more upgrades. There will be two concurrent RCs, with the 2.6.21.7 and 2.6.25 kernels. And two concurrent 4.00finals.

"I've never setup a webcam, so I'll need to be educated on the basics of it. I presume that Puppy has the required kernel modules. One thing, the Ayttm chat-client package has support for Yahoo webcam.

"There is a bit of history here, you would need to search back thru my news archive. Dingo has to use an older libpng as that is the latest that works with the older version of CUPS that Puppy uses. And why does Puppy use an older CUPS? ...that is also somewhere in the archive.
