Internet access while on holiday

December 31, 2008 — BarryK
In 24 hours from now I'll be in Melbourne, on the other side of Australia. Great place Melbourne, I'm looking forward to it. Melbourne is the capital of the State of Victoria, in the South-East corner of the country. It's the second biggest city.

I have a pretty full plate of activities lined up, and don't know when I'll be able to get online. I will try to do so regularly though. I decided to prepare some Puppy 4.1.2 CDs ready-to-post, so that I can still process orders while on holiday. I have had two orders in the past week, so if that ordering rate holds out, fine, I'll take four CDs along in anticipation.

Probably take the camera too.

Today I'm going to install 4.1.2 onto the Classmate laptop, with all the Woof stuff on an external 2.5inch hard drive. So, I should be able to keep working on Woof, even if a bit more slowly.

"Didn't realise till seeing a TV programme last night that Perth is the most isolated city in the world and that it's full of Brits. This needs much more serious investigation! There seems to some new difficulties getting UK pensions paid in Oz these days and the retiree programmes aren't being promoted so much recently. Got enough of your own fossils I suppose. Melbourne was the focus of the TV series - looks nice, but this guy is too old for all those bright lights and all-night clubbing & boozing. Done that, got a wardrobe full of T-shirts and impaired hearing from countless jazz clubs.

"Hey sage I've read that about perth also But I don't believe it one bit, what about http://www.city.iqaluit.nu.ca/ that to me is the most isolated city in the world, Its the fastest growing community in Canada, with like 80% unemployment its all Inuits, Its crazy the explosion of population in the past few years in 2006 it was around 6000, which is a city by Canadian standards and I think its well over 10000 now, Its located on Baffin Island which is a very large/cold and remote Canadian Island here's the wikipedia on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iqaluit ttuuxxx

"While Sage can speak perfectly well for himself, so in case he experiences an uncharacteristic shyness..... I imagine that Perth counts as the most remote major city; and while Iqualit certainly outshines Perth in remoteness it hardly qualifies as a City!

"It's all perspective folks. Perth has 1.5 million, Melbourne (my area) has 4 million. Perth looked 'country townish' to me in last year's visit. My suburb (40 km out of Melbourne central) has 100,000. A country town I visited recently (Inverloch - 120 km from Melbourne) has 5000. I guess I judge it by traffic. I only go into central Melbourne about once a year - this year was to visit the aquarium (not bad, Barry).
