Puppy 4.1.2 released

December 08, 2008 — BarryK
Puppy 4.1.2 is a bugfix release for 4.1 and 4.1.1.

In summary, I fixed a bug when looking for USB drives at bootup, ohci-hcd USB driver was not loading in the initial ramdisk so some interfaces not working at that stage, bugfix for .deb packages extraction, /tmp/versioncleanup fix at version upgrade, Pmetatagger bugfix, some modem detection improvements, tweak for network connection at bootup, can now load 3 SFS files, fixed a Pmount crash, prevented invalid RAM-save-interval, fixed recognition of PCMCIA in the initrd.

The announcement and release notes:
http://puppylinux.com/download/release-4.1.2.htm

Download puppy-4.1.2-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey (94.1MB) and puppy-4.1.2retro-k2.6.21.7-seamonkey.iso (94.6MB) from here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/

At the same URL you will also find the "unleashed-core" tarball and the "devx" SFS file.

Note that 4.1.2 is strictly a bugfix release. More ambitious enhancements are targeted for 4.2, which is being developed by the Puppy Community Team, coordinated by WhoDo.

"Great, but where can I get the kernel source SFS for 4.1.2? Is the old kernel-src-2.6.25.15-patched-puppy4.1.sfs compatible with 4.1.2?

"Yes, that sfs is fine. It has a typo in the filename, should be 2.6.25.16. Not your typo, mine.

"Hi Barry, (Many)^n thanks indeed as Puppy allows old PC to get a second life and not being scrapped. Less waste, and less energy expense in the build of new PC's...

No more enthusiast anymore...

"First there was Puppy, this tiny distro that let me do most of what I needed, at home and at work. Then The 4.x agony. No wireless access at home - only distro to act this way for me. At work, browsing the intranet has become a pain: the new samba browser, though nicer to see, is buggy and don't allows me to enter the shared resources. Furthermore, there's no quick access to some kind of "system proxy configuration", so for those like us at work that are behind a proxy/firewall that nice appearing package manager is useless. VNC is not there anymore, so I cannot use Puppy as it is as my little server on some out-of-hand PC. These are all simple things I could perfectly do with former installations. It sounds like Puppy is not anymore something for me. Thanks Barry and all the team for your work that I really appreciate, but you got a direction that is pointless for me. Puppy shall remain my little emergency rescue distro, but for my everyday work - being a Linux noob - it's not my shirt anymore. Regards ___ MaX

CUPS Hassles

"Love 4.12 BUT ... still having frustrating problems with CUPS that started with 4.11. Troubles have been on two desktops and one laptop and have involved three different printers. Is the CUPS shipped with 4.11 and 4.12 buggy or is there some bad interaction between 4.12, ext3, Frugal, and CUPS? In this case it is a emachine desktop model 500is and a Lexmark Z705. (The Lexmark-series model is detected so I do have a good physical connection.) I should be able to at least get the Raw driver or (the Generic under Lexmark) to print a test page but it will not. I am trying to load the Lexmark driver that handles this model but am uncertain that it will solve the problem.
