Xfwm4 window manager

December 11, 2008 — BarryK
I'm currently using Xfwm4 in Woof, I really like it. Very fast, nice GUI config.

Xfwm4 is part of Xfce, and I'm thinking of using more of Xfce. Next thing, I'll try the panel.

What I'm doing though, is keeping Rox-Filer for the desktop.

I think forum member gray and his NOP Puppy uses Xfce, but also the Xfce desktop module, no Rox-Filer.

When xfce came out - it was simple, classy and efficient. I liked it - I think Thunar was the file manager - Rox is better, faster, more options, in my opinion. This is a welcome surprise. The xfce panel is very good. Obvious. I like obvious. Gray has produced one of the most stable bases, which led to WNOP and Tigerpup (not tried Ripple yet)- because xfce is the simplest basis for compiz and GL support. Compiz might be a step too far for Woof? I hope not. The KDE used by the latest Ubuntu has some (the most useful) elements of Compiz.

"Lobster - Out of curiosity why would you use compiz instead of xfwm, which has compositing and stuff anyway? Barry - the great thing about xfwm and the xfce panel is that they correctly handle things like utility windows (used for example in the gimp 2.6). Has anybody come across any lightweight alternatives that also do? The bad thing is that by the time you use a few essential panel plugins they use even more ram than Openbox+lxpanel, even if you run them without the mcs settings thing. And I didn't have much luck trying to find out how to configure them without the mcs settings thing :(

"Sliced bread by any other name. Even mere users can manhandle it. How did it take so long to arrive at it when eg gray got a head-start a year ago?! Let's hope Woof will shutdown on all chipsets, recognise and boot from all drive IF s (not mentioning any types in particular!), and not nip my fingertips with the latest Pmount/Unmount CD/DVD drive feature.

"xfc4epanel is the best chioce i think especially with applets like genmon( generic monitor) that can be used for many things but not all of them work in puppy( such as xxkb applet) lxpanel also is good but i do not autohide...

"I always liked icewm over xfce,JWM but I had a look at xfwm4 theming properties and well I haven't tried it but as possible themes go, This looks just as good as icewm :) http://www.xfce.org/xfwm4-theme-howto/ I wonder if its as easy to configure the settings? Like IceWM has about 200 different settings. anyways Its way better than JWM due to the fact it uses xpm images and you can theme 100% of the window viewing area with animated xpm images. ttuuxxx

lxpanel vs Icewm panel

"Hi guys again, lxpanel was based on icewm panel with something like 1000 lines of code added/changed, In my vast travels on the net I've seen in the past just an icewm panel by iteslf, I actually think its a way of configuring icewm, this could also be a lite weight alternative also. I'll see what i can come up with :) ttuuxxx

"ttuuxxx, are you certain it was Icewm? As far as I know, lxpanel is based on fbpanel. lxpanel is based on Gtk2, while Icewm uses an own library. Lxpanel is plain C, Icewm C++. So I would wonder, if lxpanel is based on icewm. Mark

"Well I read somewhere Around 6 months back that LXDE was based on icewm with 1000 lines of code change, I tried to find the write up but couldn't locate it. ttuuxxx
