New Xorg drivers for 414

June 22, 2009 — BarryK
Ttuuxxx suggested that Puppy 4.x is lacking some video drivers that 3.x has.

Mmmm, yes, I'm looking into what got removed when cutting down Xorg. Ok, in /usr/X11R7/lib/xorg/modules/drivers I have now added these video drivers:

apm_drv.so (Alliance ProMotion)
ark_drv.so (Ark Logic)
cirrus_alpine.so (Cirrus Logic)
cirrus_drv.so
cirrus_laguna.so
cyrix_drv.so
dummy_drv.so
glint_drv.so (3dlabs)
i128_drv.so (Number Nine Visual Technology)
imstt_drv.so (Integrated Micro Solutions)
mga_drv.so (Matrox)
rendition_drv.so (Rendition)
s3_drv.so (S3)
vmware_drv.so (VMware)

All of the above were compiled in T2 back in November 2007. Xorg should still have worked without these drivers -- it would fallback to the generic vesa_drv.so driver if the hardware-specific driver is not found. However, the proper driver may fix some issues with this hardware, and will give faster rendering.

I don't know if these other files are needed. They were taken out also, but perhaps with the above drivers put back in, one or more of these are now required:

These have been added to /usr/X11R7/lib/xorg/modules:

libafb.so
libcfb32.so
libcfb.so
libmfb.so
libxf1bpp.so
libxf4bpp.so
libxf8_16bpp.so
libxf8_32bpp.so
v10002d.uc
v20002d.uc

Hi barry, I said I did like 3 series a bit better than 4 series, but the xorg modules in question were the ones that were added to 2.14.R, I have a feeling its one of those which make Flash 10 work properly with Seamonkey/Firefox You can get 2.14.1X the updated version That I've been working on at http://www.ttuuxxx.gposil.com/2.14X/iso/214X4.iso It has the same extra drivers that 2.14.1 didn't come with, dougal added them. Thanks for looking for the answers Barry Here's a complete list of drivers from 2.14.1X/R apm_drv.so ark_drv.so ati_drv.so atimisc_drv.so chips_drv.so cirrus_alpine.so cirrus_drv.so cirrus_laguna.so cyrix_drv.so dummy_drv.so fbdev_drv.so glint_drv.so i128_drv.so i740_drv.so i810_drv.so imstt_drv.so mga_drv.so mtx_drv.o neomagic_drv.so newport_drv.so nsc_drv.so nv_drv.so r128_drv.so radeon_drv.so rendition_drv.so riva128.so s3_drv.so s3virge_drv.so savage_drv.so siliconmotion_drv.so sis_drv.so sisusb_drv.so tdfx_drv.so tga_drv.so trident_drv.so tseng_drv.so vesa_drv.so vga_drv.so via_drv.so vmware_drv.so voodoo_drv.so

"Hi Barry I've been manually comparing 2.14 and 2.14.1R/X in Xorg and found something interesting 2 modules and 2 system links were deleted in 2.14.1X/R maybe they were faulty in 2.14 or maybe if they are removed, the video wizard would be forced to use other drivers? I don't know why dougal removed them it was these files removed. /usr/X11R7/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA.so.1.0.8762 plus system link and /usr/X11R7/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o /usr/X11R7/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so well hope that helps

"ttuuxxx, Thanks for the feedback. I have now got most of those in 414. I found a good reference page: http://www.x.org/wiki/Projects/Drivers You have listed 'riva128.so' but that is now part of 'nv_drv.so'. Ditto, 'i810_drv.so' is now part of 'intel_drv.so'. What I don't have is 'newport_drv.so', which wasn't in the T2 compile. I don't have those NVIDIA drivers or library file. Xorg has 'nv_drv.so' which is its own NVIDIA driver, whereas the ones you mentioned are from the NVIDIA company I think. Perhaps they clash. So, apart from the 'newport_drv.so', I've brought 414 up to a par with your 214X.

"Hi Barry Just let us know when its up and I'll have a look at it, If possible could you make the submenus 24x24 icons just like the main menu and not 16x16, I'll change the icons once I get a hold of it :) Its just that you have it coded somewhere and every-time I try to change it, it never displays 24x24, lol Thanks ttuuxxx

i810_drv.so is now part of intel_drv.so

"Barry keeps stating this yet intel_drv.so does not take the users preferred resolution and maintains what it thinks is best. The only way I can choose 800x600 in these intel_drv.so Puppies is to put i810_drv.so back in again and edit the xorg.cfg. As the i810 is a very common video system in older laptops I am sure I am not the only one affected - although I might be the only one who runs 800 x 600 cos my eyes are old as well as my laptop.

"Yeah, but I'm only repeating the official line, quoting from the above link: intel (formerly i810) - Intel 8xx/9xx motherboards (i810, i810-dc100, i810e, i815, i830, i845, i855, i865, i915, i945, i965) Maintainer: Alan Hourihane Is there a workaround? If we put in i810_drv.so from xorg 7.2, will it work, and will it work without clashing with intel_drv.so? No one has every come back to me with a solution for this problem.

"The workaround I have always used is described here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29144 I'm sorry - I am a humble user, not clever enough to be a developer. Will it work without clashing with intel_drv.so? I don't know and don't know how to test. At the very least it would be just nice to have the i810_drv.iso in the puppy package so all that would be necessary for i810 users would be to mod the xorg.cfg. The default would still be intel_drv so no clash.
