Telstra call waiting

August 13, 2009 — BarryK
This is a question for Aussies only!

I recently upgraded my Teltra landline account, when I signed up with Netbay for Internet dialup.

Anyway, I am getting mysteriously cutoff when logged onto Netbay, and I discovered that happens whenever someone tries to phone me.

My sister phoned yesterday, which disconnected me from the Internet. She immediately phoned my mobile, that's how I know.

I think this phenomenon is due to Telstra's "call waiting" feature? If so, does anyone know how to turn it off? I mean, can you do so by typing in certain codes on your phone?

Arizona is not terribly close to W.A., but the Internet is a wonderful thing. Does this help? http://support.webzone.net.au/helpdesk/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=18

"Hi Barry, In trying to build dpup using woof, everything seemed to work until I get the following error after symlink check dialogue: chroot: cannot execute readlink: No such file or directory. I copied over readlink from upup476 but woof spewed up this: /usr/local/petget/findwoofinstalledpkgs.sh: line 119: head: command not found. Any help here?

"Hi Barry, Yes it would be call waiting that's cutting you off. It's either *43# to switch it on and *43* to switch it off - or it might be the other way around. You get a voice confirmation when you've done it. Steve

"Interesting - in NZ phones don't normally ring if you are connected to dialup, so you never know you have missed calls, but IIRC it sounds to the caller like the phone is ringing, so nobody can tell that you are actually at home. We have a cool gizmo from our days of dialup that goes between the modem and the phone socket and allows the phone to ring. If you answer, it disconnects your internet of course. Very useful it was, although every now and again it didn't seem to disconnect the internet, so we still missed the occasional call.

"forgot to mention: > but IIRC it sounds to the caller like the phone is ringing, so nobody can tell that you are actually at home. That is only if you have call waiting of course, and you need call waiting to use the cool gizmo

"Call waiting shut off codes are different each vendor... that is for sure, ours is *70. Kind of off subject, but would like to mention if you ever use a modem in a hotel where it dials to fast... you can add blanks to the init string.. to set up delay.... some exchanges want #'s... but I think it was blanks. Add as many as needed to slow your dialing from the computer so the hotel exchange can catch up. Kind of handy to remember if you ever need the option.

does anyone have this problem with aqualung?

"I don't have any of the testing versions of puppy that include it, but I'm using aqualung compiled on Puppy 4.1.1, and I've found that it won't open files with French (etc) accents in the name - e.g. á Hopefully Barry's version is OK - can anyone confirm?
