Karmic Puppy: first build

October 20, 2009 — BarryK
I'm running "Karmic Puppy" right now. This is Puppy built from Ubuntu Karmic Koala packages.

Working nicely!

One thing though, most annoying, have got that periodic screen flicker. This happens with Intel video hardware and arrived with Xorg 7.4.
I did manage to get rid of it in a Jaunty build, by using a later Intel Xorg driver, but later when I tested an early version of Karmic, the flicker was back. Now, with the final release of karmic due out on the 29th of this month, the flicker is still there.

Anyway, apart from that, this pup is running fine. A bit fatter than your usual pup of course, with all those dependencies -- this build is 113MB with the SCSI and big-analog-modem drivers removed.

There are a few things that I want to improve, which I'll work on for a few more days.

I might look into compiling a Intel Xorg driver out of subversion.

"When I state "working nicely", that does not mean it is anywhere near release-quality. I'm sure that I will find lots of problems as I play with it. So if I do upload an iso soon it will just be a snapshot, pre-alpha quality, use on an as-is basis. My attention mostly is on Woof itself, not to get all the bugs out of a specific compatible-distro live-CD build.

"Big screen flicker as I type this... "curse you", Intel engineers, and Xorg development coordinators, and Ubuntu if you go ahead and release Karmic Koala without this video problem resolved. This guy says "Ubuntu sucks": http://www.itwire.com/content/view/28574/1141/ And also: Much of Fewts ire is aimed specifically at the Intel display drivers being used and he warns his faithful followers that come Karmic Koalas release later this month Eeebuntu users will be left with nothing but a blank screen at startup.

"The Intel driver problem is a major fail for Karmic (and Linux in general), just as Windows gets its act together with Windows 7. I read elsewhere (Distrowatch?) that Eebuntu will be changing its base to Debian unstable.

"Upgrading to Xorg 7.5 and XServer 1.7.1 will solve most of those weird Intel video issues.

"Hi Barry, I am happy to note that you are now giving much attention to the upup series. I reported sometime ago that I have been able to build karmic puppy. In fact, I have been running karmic puppy since that time. The only major problem that I have now is that for some unknown reasons to me, not all settings are saved after shutdown. Specifically, I have to always hit "enter" before settings like language and time zone are effected. Nevertheless, I will wait anxiously for your copy to be available soon. Cheers. smil99.

"How many times??!! Never tangle with Intel - everything they've ever touched has turned to stone. Why mess with Canonical and Shuttleworth. *buntus are bloated and there are serious questions about where this organisation is going. Better concentrate on your independent masterpiece and continue development of a product that finds worldwide approval? No SW is perfect - enough left in Puppy to see us all out. Well, if you must, perhaps return to the Slack-fold!

Expectations

"Let's not loose sight of the goal here, people. Woof is about choice and flexibility. It's not about KK or Ubuntu. The sooner Woof becomes the means of building Puppy from *your* favorite distro, the sooner you can choose. And as Barry keeps repeating, he's devoting this time to Woof development, not a newer, better Puppy. Don't wait for the next Upup. You will be disappointed. It's only as a means of testing Woof.
