Karmic Puppy live-CD

October 24, 2009 — BarryK
Get it from here:

http://puppylinux.com/test/karmic-puppy-20091024/

The Woof tarball and the "Karmic Puppy" live-CD ISO file are just snapshots of work-in-progress.

The Woof tarball is currently configured to build from Ubuntu Karmic Koala packages, and I used 9.10RC packages. The Intel graphics on my laptop now seems to be behaving itself, no flicker!

I think that it should be pretty straight forward to get Woof to build a Dpup as well, and ttuuxxx and gposil may have use for this latest Woof in their Dpup project. Anyone is welcome to use Woof and Karmic Puppy and further develop them.

Their Dpup project:

But for me, well, I'm taking a break, going to work on learning more about Genie and update the online docs. My main Genie page was last updated in December 2008 -- well overdue for further attention!

"Barry, Let me say thanks first of all for your wonderful distro.I have tinkered with Puppy almost since the biginning but really "dug in" deep around pup425 and have updated to every beta/release. I run fugel installs on one ext3 partition of Puppy,LighthousePup,Tinycore,Microcore,Slitaz cooking and KolibriOS stable and snapshot all booted with grub.Today I made a upup432 directory and added your latest by loopmount the iso to foo then cp -a foo/* /path/upup432 edit ~/grub/menu.1st reboot. Very nice :) As a test I removed the pup-5 and added universe then updated the package manager and installed audiacity which went into the menu and works perfectly. Any chance you might hack woof to use vanilla Debian stable/testing/unstable?That would really be sweet to play with Pup-Sid.

WOW WOW WOW

"this is what i have been waiting for--i can use Puppy *and* all of the latest linux programs, such as srware iron and chromium, both of which work out of the box: download, unpack, run. Also Firefox 3.6, Swiftfox, and Seamonkey 2. Also Puppy will use all 4 cores. All of the creativity and productivity software. And the greatest thing is that it is the Puppy desktop and user experience instead of the poke poke poke along ubuntu. additionally, puppy provides the tools for me to do things the linux way conveniently, such as opening a terminal in a particular window and mounting drives, and much more. You are going to be very famous Barry. You ought to figure the way to tastefully make money from it ;-) you ought to be rewarded for this kind of contribution.

PPM categories
Username: BarryK
"tech3k, The problem that needs to be fixed though, is that the assignment of categories for the packages is not very good. This is done automatically when the Ubuntu (or Debian) package database files are downloaded and converted to Puppy db format. Wosh is looking into improving this. For example, if you look in the "Personal" category, you will find the most inappropriate packages listed there. Gposil is looking into getting Debian's native package manager tools to work in Dpup.

aufs

"The use of writable sfs that also functions as executable (think appdir) will also change the way Puppy Linux is used. Think of apps in sfs that saves its program settings into itself! http://aufs.sourceforge.net/aufs2/logrow/README.txt

Unipup

"Raffy, Yes, also the developer of Aufs added some extra capability for mounting a layered f.s. inside the initramfs. This was something discussed on their mail list awhile back. Both of these features are of interest to the Unipup concept, that I also want to get back onto soon.

Karmic missing Files !!!
Username: ttuuxxx
"Well Barry just started bulding Karmic and well 31 missing files scattered all over the net, I'm just thinking maybe it could be better to mirror all the deb files and have it last on the list for searches, that way it will download from all other servers first and if its missing then it will pull it from the mirror? Here's a link to all the missing packages. http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/ttuuxxx/Karmic/missing/ hope that helps people. ttuuxxx

Missing?
Username: BarryK
"ttuuxxx, The Woof package that I uploaded along with the Upup snapshot iso file, should just work. Those files are not "missing". For example: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/pet_packages-4/915resolution-0.5.3-patched411.pet ...looking in file Packages-puppy-4-official, yes it is in there. Perhaps you need to run '1download' again, as some pkgs can fail to download properly. Looking at http://packages.ubuntu.com/ to check on one of those "missing" debs... http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/a/abiword/abiword_2.6.8-5ubuntu2_i386.deb And checking in Packages-ubuntu-karmic-main: ...it's there. So, no problem, the two that I checked are not missing and 1download should download them.
