i810 versus intel Xorg drivers

April 01, 2010 — BarryK
Quirky 013 has two Intel video drivers, 'i810' and 'intel'. Some people with older hardware have found that the i810 driver works, the intel driver doesn't -- in fact, the intel driver has even been reported to hang the PC.

The i810 driver is from Xorg 7.2 and the intel driver was introduced in Xorg 7.3 as it's replacement.

The Xorg Wizard in Quirky 013 does offer to change driver if the automatically selected one fails -- but that is no good if the PC has hung!

Therefore, I have added an extra button in the very first window of the Wizard, so there is now <probe>, <vesa> and <choose> buttons.

The latter will offer to use i810 immediately. I will in future expand that to allow other choices.

Sage - one day I hope to welcome you into the real world. Until then I wish you well in Sage world, where everything is designed to your specifications and you have no problems obttaining what you want.
