Quirky 1.1

I am pleased to announce the released of Quirky 1.1. Briefly:

The main focus was to fix bugs in 1.0, but I also upgraded many applications. Most importantly, SeaMonkey has migrated from the 1.x series, after we solved some bugs with the 2.x series. JWM is now the default window manager and tray, as it is noticeably faster (and looks nicer) than Openbox/Fbpanel. Two showstoppers were Ayttm and You2pup did not work, both fixed.

Bug report: Nvidia
A little bug snuck through. If you have nvidia hardware, the default 'nvidia' Xorg driver works for most people. However, in some cases the basic 'nv' driver works better. The Xorg Wizard allows you to choose either one, however the code has a bug. Type at the console (if X not runing):
# mp /usr/sbin/xorgwizard
...change line 97 to this: "rmmod nvidia"
...change line 109 to this: "modprobe nvidia"
In other words, the operation is being swapped. Then run xorgwizard:
# xorgwizard
...and it should work properly to choose between the 'nvidia' or 'nv' drivers.

Bug report: Intel
My blog documents the disappointing saga of the Intel Xorg drivers. With Quirky 1.x, which uses Xorg 7.5, we have a situation where some Intel video hardware no longer works. You will have to use the generic 'vesa' driver (slow). The only solution is to roll back to an earlier version of Xorg, 7.3, as used in Puppy 4.3.1. Also, "Wary Puppy" uses Xorg 7.3 -- this is the same as Quirky except for the older Xorg -- expect a final release of Wary soon.

Hi Barry I have been playing with the retro version for a little while. Very nice on my young fellow's lenovo R61e. Main reason for using the retro on that particular machine is that the skype sfs was crashing with the webcam (an usb webcam, tried a couple of them; particular to that machine), actually with 2.6.33 the webcam was crashing the system with any webcam app. Weird, but hey, horses for courses. I also installed Iron browser on that machine (it needs a glibc.dbus package from disciple to work, I made thread about it). My son loved the Chromium browser in Lupu but also wanted Skype. Kids! When you reran the Xorg Wizard and choose 'nv', the nvidia kernel module would have been left loaded, which apparently does not affect 'nv' driver. I'll test on some more machines with Intel video as opportunity presents. There may be a minor bug in unmounting USB flash drives. I just moved an sfs file (using a flash drive) to a machine running Quirky. After copying it from there to the internal hard drive, I unmounted the flash drive using the right click option on the drive icon. The blinking light on the flash drive never did want to quit, even though nothing was being written to the flash drive and the copy to the internal drive was complete. As I suspected it was safe to remove the drive, I rebooted the machine, using the shutdown menu, and, sure enough, the light stopped blinking immediately. The pppoe connection established via Roaring Penguin cannot be maintain during reboots.
