DejaVu fonts upgraded

June 13, 2010 — BarryK
Puppy has had the DejaVu Sans font for a long time. Some people have urged me to move to the Liberation fonts as they have the same metric (proportions, spacing) as the common Microsoft fonts (Helvetica, Times New Roman, Courier), however I have recently tried those, and The 'Liberation Sans' on the desktop looks ugly -- to my eyes anyway.

I will probably make the Liberation fonts into a PET package.

I decided to upgrade the DejaVu Sans font. The latest is 2.31. This is now in Woof, residing at /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF. I also tidied up the building of Fontconfig cache files in /var/cache/fontconfig -- this is now done in the '3builddistro' script in Woof. I removed some legacy '.fonts.cache-2' Fontconfig cache files in Woof.

Note that I compiled the DejaVu fonts with the "LGC" cutdown glyphs. See home page:

Backporting SFS4

Barry, as far as I know you already had to recompile some Puppy kernels for use with Woof (2.6.25.16, 2.6.21.7, 2.6.18). I think it should be very easy to backport SFS4 as you (and I, who cares) did with 2.6.27.47. That should solve all the SFS3/4 issues ... just think of it, if people with retro kernels (and old, slow computers) need to perform all those annoying conversions ... this could be a great addition to all retro kernels. I want to try to make a 4.1.2 ISO with a SFS4 module to replace the SFS3 one. It requires patching with my 2.6.33.5-SFS-backport patch and one "make modules" with only Squashfs selected."13 Jun 2010, 15:29"01660"79.181.133.81'True Type Fonts"wombat01"Barry, would any of these free TTF be useful for puppy? http://www.webpagepublicity.com/free-fonts.html Smokey01"13 Jun 2010, 19:00"01660"118.210.76.250'DejaVu fonts .PET package?"panzerpuppy"Is there a .PET package of the latest DejaVu fonts so I can update a Quirky install with the newest fonts?
