Spup 0.2

June 25, 2010 — BarryK
I announced this in the previous post:
http://bkhome.org/archive/blog2/201006/woof-uploaded-june-24-2010.html

By popular request (actually, one person), I have uploaded an ISO plus the 'devx' file:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/quirky/test/spup-0.2/

I am interested in getting feedback on what needs to be done to get X running for various video hardware. If the proper video driver doesn't work, you can get going with vesa driver, then experiment...

Intel
Create a file /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf:
options i915 modeset=1

Radeon
Create file /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf:
options radeon modeset=1

Nvidia
Create file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf:
options nouveau modeset=1

...the above is a suggested starting point. I read somewhere that this line may be needed also in the .conf file:
install video /sbin/modprobe radeon;/sbin/modprobe --ignore-install video
...to force the ACPI 'video' kernel module to load after the radeon (or i915, etc) kernel module.

I just tried to connect to the Internet via wireless, and found that wpa_supplicant is mssing 'libnl.so.1'. You need the Slackware package from here: http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackware/slackware-13.1/slackware/l/libnl-1.1-i486-1.txz After downloading it, bootup Spup and all you have to do is click on it. Woof is now configured to handle a .tgz or .txz file by popping up a dialog box that asks whether you want to open Xarchive or install it with petget. Username: 25 Jun 2010, 19:57

Note however that there is a bug with dependencies. When the 0setup script is run in Woof to translate the Slackware package databases into Woof-format, dependencies have any dashes removed. So 'glibc-solibs' becomes 'glibcsolibs'. Therefore PPM thinks that 'glibcsolibs' is a missing dependency. I'll fix that asap. Username: 26 Jun 2010, 16:15

"01679"114.129.167.148'Nvidia and Spup"JustGreg"I tried Spup 0.2 with a USB hard drive frugal installation. I found the nv driver work with my Acer Aspire Revo and Nvidia Ion chipset. I found that RT73.bin firmware file was missing. I will have to copy it from Lucid to get the wireless networking to work. I used a USB CD/DVD driver. I found Spup would play an audio CD. It would not play a DVD. The player would start, but would stop and not show anything. I could not find the nouveau driver. I also missed having pfind. It does work."26 Jun 2010, 23:40"01679"208.103.68.246'Spup 0.2 Quirky Repo"TazOC"I can't get the puppy-quirky-official repo to enable, even with fewer than 5 repos enabled.
