Xorg Nouveau driver for Spup

June 28, 2010 — BarryK
Slackware 13.1 does not have the open source Nouveau Nvidia Xorg driver. The latest Nouveau source requires the 2.6.34 kernel, and as I am now using that kernel, I decided to give Nouveau a go (again).

This person has already done it:

So, I downloaded the source and compiled it, and it will be in the next release of Spup.

Trying for Lucid

Barry, I am trying to do the same for Lucid. I have been using: to do it. I have got the source code. I found that I was missing config.guess and config.sub. Found them and move to needed directory. The file ran and said it completed, but, there was no driver file. Any thoughts on what I may be doing wrong. The good news is I now can do the official Nvidia package fairly well now."30 Jun 2010, 8:29"01684"'Never Mind"JustGreg"I missed a period (.) on the directory name. I need better tri-focal glasses:D I did get it to work."30 Jun 2010, 8:56"01684"'Lucid Nouveau Results"JustGreg"I just finished trying to get Nouveau to play nicely with Lucid. I did get Nouveau to work with Luci-205 and Nvidia Ion chipset machine. However, there were problems. It appears the Nouveau driver needs kernelmodesetting function. Based on the Novueau wiki informaton, it is based to use Linux kernel 2.6.35 or later. Linux 2.6.33 should have supports kernelmodesetting. But, I could not use it. I followed trying to use kernel mode commands at boot resulted in complete failure of x server with Luci 205. I thought I would pass this to you"3 Jul 2010, 6:34"01684"'Nouvea KMS"BarryK"I thought that the Nouveau driver requires 2.6.34 -- that's what it states in the link in the first post. But, I didn't read the actual Nouveau latest docs. I just now looked in the Nouveau source tarball, no docs in it except for a brief man page. Yes, you need to create /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau.conf with this in it: options nouveau modeset=1 ...that will turn on KMS when the 'nouveau' kernel module loads. Username: 3 Jul 2010, 8:48
