Using Vodafone USB modem again

October 15, 2010 — BarryK
I am back in Perth, able to use the Vodafone USB wireless modem.

Running Wary 0.9, it is no easier to get this modem going.

PupDial first finds /dev/ttyUSB1, I try Connect, get "No carrier...", then I click button to choose /dev/ttyUSB3, and that then connects ok.

But the problem is, at next boot I find that sometimes it will connect with /dev/ttyUSB3, sometimes it simply says cannot find the interface.

Pressing Choose or any button does not get me back to /dev/ttyUSB1, and I have to exit PupDial then edit wvdial.conf and change it back to /dev/ttyUSB1, then start PupDial and go through the same procedure of trying to connect then changing to /dev/ttyUSB3.

It seems that this modem requires an initial operation of some kind on /dev/ttyUSB1, then it works on /dev/ttyUSB3.

Barry, i have tried my usb dongle and no problem was encountered with wary9 running off of the cd and a save file on the hard drive. I am in the UK but i cannot see that it would make any difference. I used pup dial from the setup/internet pull down menu, after connection a pop up offered to make pup dial the preferred connection manager which for this experiment i did. Rebooted and click on network tray icon and pup dial interface popped up. click connect and here i am.

"Today it worked without any problem. It does seem important to plug it in after Puppy has booted. I plugged it in, waited until the blue LED started to flash on the modem, then ran PupDial and it connected straight away on /dev/ttyUSB3. I need to try this exact sequence again. zygo, Thanks for the link, gives me some ideas to try.

"Barry, I was about to tell you that the procedure you've described is obvious but I remember now that it took me a while to learn it. Note: 1. I find that once the internet connection is dropped I have to reinsert the modem for pupdial to work. 2. I have only one tick in event manager -- to load modules. Maybe the autoplay thing gets in the way. I don't know I have never had it enabled. 3. I had unreliable switching due to a bug in remastering of Puppy 431. When it failed (ie the modem wasn't listed in Hardinfo) I noticed that usb_modeswitch had hung. For some time my procedure was to disable the udev rule, insert the modem and run the switch command in rxvt. This was always successful for some reason.

"I reported above: Today it worked without any problem. It does seem important to plug it in after Puppy has booted. I plugged it in, waited until the blue LED started to flash on the modem, then ran PupDial and it connected straight away on /dev/ttyUSB3. I have repeated this successfully three more times. Yes, it is important to plug it in after Puppy has booted.
