sub-100MB Wary 104

December 22, 2010 — BarryK
For those who have a thing about small puppies, I have built Wary 104 (Release Candidate) with less kernel drivers and without the Adobe Flash Player (easy to install).

The live-CD weighs in at 99.7MB:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/quirky/wary-104/wary-104-small.iso
md5sum: e5734fe950ec9b67e006c2b6859c1c22

Or, if you already have Wary 102, here is a delta file (20MB):
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/quirky/wary-104/delta-files/wary-102.iso___wary-104-small.iso.delta
md5sum: 248a84290b7de2f229db68f2ecb4cee1

Note, be careful about mixing this with the full build on the same computer. Best to remove all traces of the other before testing this one.

Note, the kernel drivers pulled out are all the "big" analog modem, all true-SCSI, and a host of "exotic" drivers that most people are unlikely to need.

"The excission of Phlash is welcome, and logical: - all-too-easy to install with good 'Net connection - white elephant, otherwise. Thanks!

"Just in time for Christmas a real Puppy, thank you, thank you. If it weighs more than 100mb it just ain't a Puppy to me. I know it is very difficult to meet that standard. Merry Christmas joe

re yaf-splash

"/usr/X11R7/bin/yaf-splash is the old one, that has been in Puppy for a long time. /usr/bin/yaf-splash is a symlink to gtkdialog-splash, and that is the newcomer, like within a year. Ok, I will change xorgwizard to use the new yaf-splash. Note, the old yaf-splash is used in many other scripts.

"Thanks for answer. Now I understand. So I'll delete prefix /usr/X11R7/bin/ before yaf-splash in ppm scripts, connectwizard... For xorgwizard it is needed to add LANG=C in /usr/sbin/xinitrc_test.

"No, you can't just delete it, as there are still several scripts that use it. It has a slightly different commandline syntax from the new yaf-splash. Ideally, I should find all such scripts (most of them in latest Wary 104 have fixed path /usr/X11R7/bin/yaf-splash, so easy to find them), and modify them. But, want to minimise changes for awhile, until Wary Final is out. Anyway, I will do that LANG=C fix for xinitrc_test.

"opening other partitions or mem devices is taking 3-10sec before directories shown, 102 was immediate. ppm downloads, save not immediate install, are ending as .tar.gz not .pet. otherwise best version so far. merry christmas to all

"scsijon, Thanks for reporting that bug, see fix: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=480676#480676

Where do we report BUGS

"Seems that there are 2 different WARYs (normal size and small). You may want to separate them and you may want to share in this blog where bugs should be reported. Hope this helps
