Request to test sound

May 16, 2011 — BarryK
There is a potential issue where the main sound hardware can conflict with modem hardware. I discussed this with rerwin just prior to releasing Woof and Wary 5.1.1.56, now will tackle it.

Rerwin has posted to the forum about this problem, and I have posted a possible solution for testing:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=522925#522925

If you are running Wary or Quirky, would you mind testing this? The most important thing is, if your sound is working fine now, I need to know that it still works after the change. So, I would like as many people as possible to try this.

There are three distinct steps that you have to do:

1. Install /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
2. Remove all /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_card*.conf files
3. Replace /sbin/pup_event_backend_modprobe

EDIT: right-click pup_event_backend_modprobe, choose 'Properties', make sure 'execute' checkboxes are ticked.

The help will be appreciated!

Oh one other thing, if you have previously run the Alsa Wizard, it will have created entries in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf -- please delete those lines also. You will find two lines like this:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

Get rid of those, so that you are starting from a clean slate. Reboot, if you find that Alsa Wizard is no longer needed then that will be great.

Problem with replacement for "pup_event_backend_modprobe"

BarryK, the permission level for your replacement for "pup_event_backend_modprobe", extracted from your "pup_event_backend_modprobe.gz" file, is not set "executable". This is probably the cause of a lot of the problem reports in the "Wary Puppy 5.1.1.56 (5.1.2 beta2)" forum at http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=522925#522925.
