InkscapeLite is good

August 24, 2011 — BarryK
I was just reminded, I read a post in the forum recently that InkscapeLite is no good for anything. I also read a similar post sometime ago.

Not so! I use InkscapeLite a lot. The main reason that I use it is to create composite bimap images. Vovchik has created an overlay application for PNG images, but all along we have had InkscapeLite that does this very well, and then some.

You can import PNG images, arrange them as required, insert text, line-art, then export as a PNG bitmap image. Works great. I used it today, wanted to overlay the SoftMaker icon on top of an empty document image, to create a mime-type icon for SoftMaker documents.

InkscapeLite is in most puppies. It is very small, one of the main reasons it is inbuilt.

" tried it long ago and not since. also figured it was not good for anything then. tried again today with the above instructions and can now see a use. perhaps it has been fixed in the interim. before i couldn't figure out how to save any useful format. still need to tidy up in mtpaint to jpg format for size considerations.

InkscapeLite for presentations

"Raffy, I don't think that InkscapeLite is able to handle multiple pages. But, to design individual pages, save them as PNG, then use some other app to view the images, yes, that would make a passable presentation system. But I am thinking, this could be a project for someone, to develop InkscapeLite into a presentation application. With a full-screen presentation mode, support multiple pages and means of moving beteen them. It need not be concerned with compatibility with other presentation apps, at least not initially -- just to have our own presentation app in Puppy would be great. Or, the approach could be to develop a presentation app that just launches InkscapeLite to create each page. ...come to think of it, that wouldn't be so difficult. Maybe I should put this into my "Puppy Projects" page?

SVG pages

"Oh, and InkscapeLite would just save each page in native SVG format, the wrapper presentation app can display those as-is. The advantage is each page remains fully editable. SVG also supports animations, so supporting that in the presentation app would be great.

"SVG also supports links, so you can have hyperlinks in a page to go to any other page in the presentation, or a website.

"Glad you like the idea, Barry. I've been doing the poor man's presentation using Puppy's image viewers since version 2.00 (one sure way to do a lecture with li'l Puppy :). Quote BarryK: 'Maybe I should put this into my "Puppy Projects" page?' Please do. Thanks!!!
