Lucid will lose "official" status

February 27, 2012 — BarryK
Playdayz, the coordinator of Lucid Puppy, and I have agreed that by the time of the next official releases of Racy, Wary and Slacko, Lucid will be dropped from the list of "official" puppies.

Lucid is based on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx binary packages and is getting on to two years old. Even though there have been upgrades, the time has come to "de-emphasise" Lucid. However, Lucid will likely continue as another puplet, for those interested.

The idea of "official" is those puppies that we list in puppylinux.com as the first-stop for newcomers. And of course they get announced on distrowatch.com. But of course there are many other puplets, and even separate projects that promote themselves separately, such as on Distrowatch.

As you guys know who have followed Lucid development, playdayz (Larry) has done an incredible job, and has "hung in there" for a long time. Of course there are many others who have assisted.

+1. Larry has done a fantastic job. To tell the truth, lucid is still the No1 featured puplet for now, followed by Slacko in a tight race. Although Lucid is much slower than Wary in ancient machines, I can play wmv files/streams in Lucid/Slacko o.o.t.b., for example, which lacks in Wary. Thanks and keep your puplets updated, Larry! Follow your path!

"Barry - I think you should add a call to isohybrid at the end of 3builddistro. This way, you can do "dd in=/puppy/iso of=/dev/flash_drive" and there you have a USB drive with Puppy, which is pretty neat - without having to format or install a boot loader.

This could be a mistake

"I know time marches on and operating systems evolve. However, Puppy versions seem to change way to much. The idea of a long term support version of Puppy, that Playdayz has been doing with Lucid, is very much needed. Lucid Puppy has been well supported in clearing out bug issues and keeping programs up to date. It also has features that other versions do not. One big one. It actually has a help, in the menu, that is a real help to new users. From posts in the forum, it seems to be able to work on a large number of computers. From the very old to the cutting edge new. I know, I have both types of computers. Think of it as the Puppy version that just will not die. There must be a reason. Too many versions of Puppy are made, and never fine tuned and bug fixed, before moving to the next new version. Lucid Puppy is not one of those. I for one , hope Playdayz keeps supporting Lucid. I will.

What is long term support?

"3 to 5 years, to me, is long term. Lucid was in development for a year or more. Another year fixing bugs and tweaking. Now just dump it, because it is over 6 months old. Wary has been around for over a year, so time to dump that one too. Oh, seems Barry is giving that one, long term support. 01micko has already determined that Slacko is going to be for newer hardware. You would think money is being made with Puppy. This mad rush to come up with a new version, all the time. So you can get people, to buy a new operating system, to replace the one that still works fine. I can think of one operating system version, that lasted for 10 years, even after trying, several times, to kill it with new versions. It still gets security updates. It got program updates and tweaks, long term. 10 years and more. Yes, development of operating systems, must move on. Hardware changes.

"I'm not sure about Lucid, but IMO, Luki should be made the flagship Puppy once it's reached maturity... eventhough it has a strange name.

Lucid LTS

"I do not know if Playdayz had enough of Lucid, but if he has the stamina to support it further, I would think is a mistake to drop it as an official release. Lucid is the puppy that comes to as close as possible to an LTS regarding core stability, maturity and repo. Ubuntu 10.04 TLS just did its final point release and is going to be supported for another year. If playdayz can go that much further I would suggest to change the name to just that "Puppy Lucid LTS" with the notion that is entering its final year. My 2c

"Lucid is my main for almost 2 years, because a. as a wannabee user (<> tweaker) I do not like to swap every 3 weeks from system to system b. it is well maintained, and 3. it has lots of software. Another -well maintained- but unofficial are the distros from pemasu. He keeps improving his distros and adds new features. Maybe racy and slacko are way better but from a point of view of "ease of use" I'll stick to Lucid.

Please Reconsider

"Please reconsider, bigpup's remarks about Lucid are very valid. Since you have already provided the capability to be compatible with other OS's, we need long term support for that compatibility with Ubuntu, Debian, and Slackware. We also need to have under development another version that's compatible with later Ubuntu releases such as Precise Pangolin for later hardware, just as Slacko is with compatibility with Slackware and Dpup with Debian. All of these should have recognition as official puppies, they are not just another puplet.

"As Barry said, he and I agree that now is the time to change Lucid's official status. But just because Lucid won't be official, doesn't mean it is going to disappear. It will be right there in the thread where it has always been. In my opinion the current ISO, 5.2.8.004, is quite good. There is also a package of Puppy Program Updates for those who want the latest Pmusic by zigbert, PupControl by radky, and the other programs created by members of the Puppy community. Very likely we will roll all the updates into a 5.2.8.005 ISO. For those who want something a bit more experimental, there is the Testing-01 ISO, on which rerwin has taken a leading role. With the Testing ISO Lucid is still innovating--at rerwin's suggestion it contains *all* of the drivers that tempestuous has created for Lucid. I am hoping there will be a Testing-02 ISO. I will continue to package and post the latest browsers and other progams of interest for Lucid. There is also Three-Headed Dog which is basically Lucid with the current Slacko kernel. Thanks first to Barry, who took a chance and trusted me to represent what he had worked so hard to create. I cannot thank 01micko enough. I had some strengths and weaknesses just like everyone else--and 01micko balanced my weaknesses and brought his own considerable strenghts--as everyone can see from Slacko. What Lucid is, is significantly due to Mick--the good parts anyway ;-) Thanks also to the large number of developers and testers--Bigpup at the head of the list--many are listed in the first message of the current Lucid thread. Lucid is due to all of you.

My brain hurts.

" I add my vote to bigpup. When Lucid first kicked off I thought it was crap. BUT IT EVOLVED INTO THE GREATEST PUPPY EVER. Many of the puplets that followed it have pinched ideas from it and made it better. And now the great idea is to dump it. Here's a great idea....more support for Broadcom wireless b43....out of the box. Saluki still not working....>> b43. Video should work out of the box as well. :::::::::::: " The idea of "official" is those puppies that we list in puppylinux.com as the first-stop for newcomers. " Hey! I don't keep the latest kit. Yes let's support new gear. But don't forget where we started inj getting older equipment going. I always advocate letting users run Puppy and keep Windows. Plenty of disenchanted Win users became Puppy newbies because they tried out Lucid as a first time Linux distro, and were happy with it. I thought that we were a bit smarter with our Puppy outlook and progress. Unfortunately this comes under the Dumb and Dumber approach. playdayz and the team have advanced Puppy immeasurably. They need do no more. But this is a BS decision. Sometimes even I have to apologise and say that I stuffed up. Just don't tell my friends eh! Chris.

"There has been a steady stream of good feedback about Lucid Puppy, people whom you could tell that they know how to judge a good OS. As long as playdayz and the community supports it, it will remain popular. Thanks, playdayz and the team.

It Worked For Me

"Lucid is the only version where everything worked on my Dell laptops. I'm using Slacko now - and...no touchpad!! Sound, touchpad, wireless internet, firewall, everything worked for me in Lucid. True, Slacko is faster but, I really do appreciate the fine work that Lucid represents. On ya! Maybe help these other guys out so our touchpads can work in their versions too!

"> You would think money is being made with Puppy. This mad rush to come up with a new version, all the time. So you can get people, to buy a new operating system, to replace the one that still works fine. The point is that because money isn't being made with Puppy, money is not a barrier to people getting the latest version. And also generally the latest version doesn't add any bloat, so doesn't require hardware upgrades.
