Lucid Puppy 528 -005 released

April 10, 2012 — BarryK
Although I have posted about Lucid Puppy 528 being de-emphasized, not an "official" release anymore, it continues to be actively developed and will interest many people.

There are various reasons why Lucid might suit you:

1. One is compatibility with the Lucid Lynx DEB package repositories.
2. Another is that it has many enhancements provided by some keen developers.
3. Another reason is that it has become very mature.
4. Being mature, it has also accumulated a good collection of PETs that you can install.
5. Also, it is still being actively supported, so if you have a problem, there are people to help you.

Some reasons why you might not be interested in Lucid:

1. Built from an old version of Woof, so is missing many of the fixes and improvements that I have announced on my blog over the last couple of years -- though Lucid has been going on an independent parallel path with it's own development, so there will be many Woof-level improvements since the original fork from the official Woof (plus some ported from the official Woof). So, this is not necessarily a reason against.
2. The Lucid Lynx repos are getting old. I don't know when Ubuntu will drop them. Also, as Lucid Puppy gets upgraded with it's own PETs, I don't know about compatibility with (some of) the DEBs on the Ubuntu repos.

If you are having issues with the puppy that you are currently running, try Lucid.

On April 5, 2012, playdayz released the 005 sub-version release of Lucid Puppy 528. See Forum announcement:

I think you stated things very accurately Barry. Lucid is still experimenting with things that might be useful to other Puppies, such as the working Help in Abiword and the web links in many programs Help -> About, that is in sub-version 005. Some people may also find Lupu Libre interesting--it has Libre Office built-in and integrated with the desktop. Although it is larger than most Puppies it still copies into ram in computers with at least 768MB; because of this Libre Office, which can be slow, runs nicely. There are also Lupu Plus with 41 extra drivers prepared by tempestuous and possibly even something called Super Lupu. It's all in the links Barry provided above.

"With all due respect to the work put in to various puppy releases, I want to point out one thing that makes LuPu -- Lucid Puppy -- stand out. In my humble opinion it's the "Control" icon on the desktop "PCP" or "PupControl". I downloaded Slacko 5.3.1 Puppy only to find the PupControl wasn't as rich as LuPu's. If more recent releases of Puppy can offer as thorough and as useful a PupControl as LuPu's, I'll gladly switch. Until then, LuPu will serve nicely for my needs.

"Auldsbel, That is PupControl by forum member radky. You can add it to any Puppy. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=281294821&t=61961

"Any chance of a 5.3.1 Puppy release that will sport a copy of LibreOffice like LuPuLibre? That would make for a delightful 5.3.1. -grins-

"user2, If you are writing about Lucid 528, please go to the Forum thread and report the problem. If it is a problem with the latest Woof-built puppies Wary/Racy 5.3, then it would probably be best to post to that Forum feedback thread (as I will be working through that thread soon, solving reported issues). -- also, I have not quite understood your problem, so you will have to post with more details, treat me as really dumb.
