Slow going

August 09, 2012 — BarryK
I have run into a problem with the latest builds of Wary and Racy. ROX-Filer refuses to display thumbnails. It outputs an error message that I cannot understand.

I have been trying to figure out what is wrong, no success.

So, I am now going through a very painfully slow process of elimination. I have checked out the version of Woof used to build Wary/Racy 5.3 -- commit 9d81d0919b, April 3, 2012 -- build Racy, test ROX, then update Woof by say one month, build Racy and test ROX, etc.

"I've been playing with Gray's RacyNOP - superb. I think THUNAR is better than ROX & XFCE is great. Is it worth considering those?

"I am considering, down the track, to shifting to spacefm/jwm. (a pcmanfm fork). I have been trialling it and it looks and feels nice, but it's early days yet. In the latest slacko alpha rox doesn't want to build, it seems to work ok though.

"Hi micko I had a look at spacefm, I think it looks promising for puppy but it would have to be hacked to get rid of the annoying root popup as the image shows, other than that I give it two thumbs up there are tons of pics at the website homepage, http://ignorantguru.github.com/spacefm/ ttuuxxx

Fix for ROX-Filer

"I have found the cause of the thumbnails problem. It goes back to this: http://bkhome.org/archive/blog2/201205/gconv-modules-cache.html The PET 'glibc-2.10.1-w5c.pet' used in Wary/Racy 5.3 was upgraded to 'glibc-2.10.1-1-w5c.pet', the latter has file /usr/lib/gconv/gconv-modules.cache. Removing this file fixes ROX-Filer. This may be the cache file that I created. The original compile in T2 did not create the cache file. If we use the cache file provided with a distro's binary glibc package, that is ok. When I create it myself, it doesn't work properly. The 'glibc' template in Woof will grab the cache file if it exists, so that is ok.

Kernel 3.2 for Rpi

"Barry, it seems the Raspberry Pi guys got kernel 3.2 to work well, which means three things: - It's the kernel used in Wheezy, so we should switch to it to avoid future incompatibilities with either Debian, Raspbian or the firmware. - It's LTS, which is great for us - we can stick with it and provide minor version updates once in a while. - The firmware in the SD card skeleton must be up to date - perhaps, Woof could download the firmware automatically. I think we could benefit a lot from switching to this kernel (with hardware float support). It shouldn't be hard to make this switch, since it's only one major version above 3.1.x. By the way, I ordered a Raspberry Pi yesterday - it should arrive within three weeks :)

"Came across this> http://www.bhphotovideo.com/indepth/announcements/new-android-powered-nikon-coolpix-s800c?BI=8938&kw=S800c. Wonder if we could build a Puppy for it! I know a couple of SuSE'rs are looking at it. Now, that would be fun

I discouraged people from using it not so long ago because I was having to report too many crashes, but they've been doing a good job of fixing them.
