Ok, let's roll back. I have an older source package, 2008-10-17. Trying in pup 412... yep, compiles, and works, the three media files play, both video and sound. Note, I have compiled Mplayer with internal ffmpeg.
Booted up Jaunty pup, all files play, with both sound and video. Interesting, the Real Media file that Gxine plays with chopped sound is now ok.
Tried a couple of DVDs. For both, a message popped up:
Warning MVs not available
The second DVD started to play then quit. It's one that I used for testing and has always played in the past.
I suppose to be complete, I should recompile Mplayer with external ffmpeg...
For the record, this is how ffmpeg 0.5 is configured:
# ./configure --prefix=/usr --cpu=i486 --enable-libmp3lame --enable-pthreads --enable-small --enable-libvorbis --enable-gpl --enable-shared --disable-static --enable-postproc --disable-debug --enable-libtheora --enable-bzlib --enable-libgsm --enable-zlib --enable-swscale
For the record, this is how I have configured Mplayer to use external ffmpeg:
# ./configure --prefix=/usr --confdir=/etc --enable-gui --disable-lirc --disable-lircc --disable-smb --disable-esd --disable-jack --disable-openal --disable-arts --target=i386-linux --disable-musepack --disable-dvdread-internal --disable-libdvdcss-internal --disable-libavcodec_a --disable-libavformat_a --disable-libavutil_a --disable-libpostproc_a --enable-runtime-cpudetection --enable-menu
That troublesome Real Media file plays, video and audio both nice -- audio is not chopped! However, there is an error msg:
[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
All three video files have the above warning, but they all play fine.
So, the big moment, what about that DVD that crashed before...
...oh, that's a shame, it crashes. Still get that "Warning MVs not available", and the DVD starts for a few seconds, then stops.
Tried another DVD, it also played for a few seconds then stopped. This is the last terminal output:
[mpeg2video @ 0xb6fad698]ac-tex damaged at 25 7
[mpeg2video @ 0xb6fad698]Warning MVs not available
[mpeg2video @ 0xb6fad698]concealing 1305 DC, 1305 AC, 1305 MV errors
V: 7.2 176/176 6% 3% 0.0% 0 0
Close, but no cigar.

I built spup with alpha3. It was very successful, and I was more than happy with it. My next build will be from alpha 6.
I had trouble with mplayer. First I tried the slackware version. Waaaaay too many dependencies and dependencies of dependencies. I tried the 4.1.2 repo version, still no go. Then I resorted to Patriot's build. If that didn't work I was going to try to compile it myself. Well lucky for me it worked. Only problem is that it crashes if there is a second title in a DVD, it only plays the default title, which is ok if that is the main movie! See what happens in alpha 6 ;)

Re: mplayer crash
I messed around too long, have left it for now. The Mplayer developers need to fix this. Yes, if the DVD just goes straight into the movie, no problem.
