/usr/sbin/pmount
/usr/local/pup_event/frontend_startup
/usr/local/pup_event/frontend_change
/usr/local/pup_event/frontend_funcs
/usr/local/bin/drive_all

That's good!

Chromium 153 displays capital U as lowercase u

We are experiencing one Chromium bug after another. We figure out a workaround, then get hit with another.

We have to revert to XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS unset in /etc/profile

But now we are back to pavucontrol causing chromium to crash.

EasyOS version 7.4.90 maybe 7.5RC

As reported in previous post, kernel 7.2.6 and built with excalibur-backports packages:

Anyone interested in testing it?

Is this kernel OK on old PCs? With all of those backports, do all the apps and utilities still run OK?

If this new version ticks all the boxes, I don't see why not make it a Release Candidate for Easy 7.5.

I haven't made it available as an update from Easy 7.4.10, as decided to be cautious. Maybe just do a standalone new install of 7.4.90, then test as much as possible. An EASYCLONE file could probably be used, in fact, I'm going to do that next.

There could be an update of 7.4.10 or earlier, just extract the three files out of the7.4.90 .img file.

I'll start a new forum thread.

Ha ha, those of you who have been following my posts for awhile will know I'm currently doing the "nomad" thing, living in caravan parks and campgrounds. Where I'm currently staying, there is free Starlink wifi, but very slow upload. The easy-7.4.90-amd64.img file, at 1.1GB, took about 5 hours to upload! Might be a good idea to check the md5sum after download.

EasyOS with Excalibur-backports and 7.2.6 kernel

One of the EasyOS testers reported a missing ethernet driver, that is available in the 7.1 kernel. So, I felt motivated to build Easy with a later kernel; Easy 7.4.x currently has the 6.12.x kernel.

Then thought also, why not also build with the Trixie/Escalibur "backports" package repository. Running it right now. Here are the backports packages that were brought into the build:

...that "bpo13" identifies the package as a backport to Debian 13.

Evince PDF viewer rolled back to gtk2 version

Yes, 1-pixel wide window borders, how useless. I also think the UI is poorly designed.

The old gtk2 version of Evince, on the otherhand, has normal system window decorations and a very sensible UI. Makes me wonder if there was a change of developers when moving to gtk3.

Anyway, I have decided to go back to the gtk2 Evince for the next release of EasyOS. It does lack support for some file formats, but handles PDF well, as far as I can recall.

Precaution when insufficient space in working-partition

A couple of people have run into this problem, of having insufficient free space in the working-partition. There are various scenarios where this is a problem.

One of those is when do a version update; the latest 'vmlinuz', 'initrd' and 'easy.sfs' may push the free space below a reasonable value. One precaution that can be taken is to reduce the history-depth; that is, how many previous versions of Easy are kept. I have inserted this code into /inc/07-new-version script, at line 28:
