About Smartlink

April 24, 2008 — BarryK
I have not yet compiled the Smartlink package with the 2.6.25 kernel. Will do that tonight.

I have downloaded it from here:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/

It seems to be stuck since 2005 on version 2.9.11, but someone is updating it somewhat. As this link explains, Smartlink got bought out by Conexant:

Unfortunately, we know about Conexant's money-grabbing attitude.

I have been using Puppy since the 0.xx series, since 2.xx it has been my primary OS. I think you may have about the only distribution still actively supporting modems. I work with a program distributing computers to low income people in the USA. Most of the people we serve cannot afford high speed connections. At the moment we use Vector Linux on the computers we distribute but, installing anything but a hardware($$) modem is a non-trivial task, as it is in most Linux distributions. Puppy does an excellent job of automatically detecting and installing software modems. I usually assume that if Puppy can't figure the modem out then it isn't worth messing with. Plus, by looking at Puppy's modem scripts I was able to figure out how to get these winmodems to work in Vector (or other distros for that matter). Thanks for all of the work you and others have put into this. Mike
