ntfs-3g upgraded

April 21, 2008 — BarryK
I have upgraded the ntfs-3g package from 1.417 to 1.2412.

It has also been compiled statically with uClibc for inclusion in the initramfs. That's /bin/ntfs-3g.

A couple of scripts needed to be updated, /bin/mount and /init (in the initramfs).

This new driver can also wake up a hibernated ntfs partition, by deleting the hibernation file. I have activated this feature in the initramfs. If you have put your pup_save on it, then I reckon that you would want it to be brought out of hibernation. This affects some notebooks.

The thing is though, the hibernation saved info would be lost... is that really bad?

I tested on a relative's XP system. Works fine. Haven't tested the hibernation thing though.

"The thing is though, the hibernation saved info would be lost... is that really bad? I think that has the potential to make somebody very unhappy, surely the hibernation file could contain unsaved data. I presume that without doing this it is impossible to boot a hibernated disk into anything other than windows. Surely it would be much safer to display a nice explanatory message and tell them to boot into windows or use a puppy CD to boot and then provide a utility to fix the problem if the user chooses.

"I really wouldn't recomend just deleting this file, as HairyWill says it's very likely to loose people's data. I would however like to see an option to delete the file and carry on using Puppy; personally I only really hibrnate Windows by mistake, and it's such a hastle to reboot and wait for it load. Perhaps a message via curses in the initramfs, so as to preserve the option of loading a Pupsave, the other options being to reboot or mount the drive read only.

"I daily put my XP on hibernation even several times along the day. It's such a hassle to me to start over again XP I have no found yet a complete replacement for all the WinXP applications I typically use, BTW I'm still student that explains the heavy reliance on WinXP. I will pull my hairs out if I would lost the hibernation session, so many windows opens and so many stuff up, don't enjoy having to open everything several times a day. I love Puppy for its responsiveness, for quick Internet surfing and because it's becoming so polished I'm still tweaking software on Wine and Vbox to make the jump to a portable and safe OS.

"hibernation: Each time I boot Puppy I delete the hiberfil.sys and thepagefile.sys. Never a problem.

"Ok, I've disabled that feature! Instead, at bootup if the ntfs partition is hibernated, there is just a message letting you know that it cannot be mounted.

"I don't know if you've fixed this already. Pupdial in beta2 doesn't work for me, keeps saying bad init string. Copied the one from Beta1. Now it works. My init string is: AT$QCMDR=3
