Scanner test

August 23, 2008 — BarryK
Is there anyone who has a working scanner in 4.1alpah6?

There was one report of a USB scanner not working. Did it work with earlier puppies? Is it supposed to work with Sane?

If you have a USB scanner that should work but doesn't -- and this is important, it is no good reporting that your scanner does not work in 4.1alpha6 when it is not supported by Sane -- could you try this utility:

# sane-find-scanner

Here is the man page for this utility:

sane-find-scanner reported this for my usb scanner 'epson perfection 2400 photo': found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x011b [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:005:007 sane-project.org tells about complete support using the epson2 backend. Works great in Puppy 3.01, but not in Puppy 4.00 or in latest alphas

"Here's some results: Mustek 1200 UB Plus should be supported using 68xx backend according to sane-project.org. however
# sane-find-scanner found USB scanner (vendor=0x05d8, product=0x4002, chip=GT-6801) at libusb:002:002 # scanimage -L device `gt68xx:libusb:002:002' is a Mustek BearPaw 1200 CU flatbed scanner

# xsane [gt68xx] Couldn't open firmware file (`/usr/share/sane/gt68xx/PS1fw.usb'): No such file or directory
So I downloaded the firmware and placed it in the relevant directory. However then running xsane from the command line gives
[xsane] ERROR: xsane-startimage not found. Looks like xsane is not installed correct.
and although the interface windows pop up, if I try a scan or a preview, nothing happens except all the interface windows freeze. the scanner doesn't respond either.

"Plugged by Canon Lide 35 into my Samsung X05 laptop, fired up Xsane and it scanned first time. Nothing wrong here. Many thanks, Jon.

"I have a usb scanner that is suppose to work with Sane, I did try other versions of Puppy to see if I could get it to work (I think it was puppy 3.01 for sure!) but that even happens to all the other Linux distro's out there with this scanner/printer, the printer works flawless in Puppy 4. Scans just don't work, recognizes the scanner, put the correct command line, the scanner makes a hum and it just go's back and forth continuously in little increments, won't stop unless I actually unplug the Usb cable.

just a note

"I have had the x1185 to scan once every while, usually the scan-image (backend) works (but only sometimes) using this type of command "scan-image --resolution 150 --paper-size Letter page.pnm" then hit enter, that gets it going, will it scan properly that I don't know.
