4.1 release schedule
September 16, 2008 —

Zigbert is doing some mods to some of his apps and asked about getting enough time to do it for 4.1-final. I had previously mentioned September 21 as the final release date, as my Royal Show job starts on the 22nd.
However, that date can fall back. I can still put in two or three hours on Puppy in the evenings. When it looks like everything is mostly ready, probably sometime after the 21st, I'll upload a "rc" (release candidate) for anyone who wants to do a quick sanity check, then the final soon after.

" However, that date can fall back. " If Puppy 4.1 is going to be your swansong; let it be one remembered as a show stopper. For all the Plod that is so often released by some of the competition..... let your last chapter in this book be a stunner. I was about to say something about your mercurial talents not being recognised. After looking at dictionary.com however.... I realised that there are a number of definitions. " 1. changeable; volatile; fickle; flighty; erratic: a mercurial nature. 2. animated; lively; sprightly; quick-witted. ' Some will point out that with many Puppy releases, number 1 fits the bil for Barry Kauler. For myself....I believe that the second definition is the goer for you. I am not trying to belittle you in any way. I will miss your leadership and abilities. Modesty.... a little known habit in many parts of the world; and becoming extinct here in Australia.... has always been your strong suit. Puppy is more than modest now, and as is the way of things... virtually unknown in OZ.... but well recognised in other parts of the globe. Enjoy your Perth show... I feel like hopping aboard a jet in Sydney, and travelling over yonder just to shake your paw and say hello. But nobody deserves that life experience. Enjoy your new found freedom.... keep in contact...and maybe...just maybe... keep up the suspense, the surprise and the wonder for a few more days. Surely we can wait that little longer. Chris.
Delaying the Release Date

"I think it will be a good idea to delay it, in the hope that while in Perth you won't have time to do any "real" development, hence just concentrate on bugfixing and updating... There's no need to rush the release.
4.1beta Great Fixes!

"Congrats already for 4.1beta! As I have posted on the general Forum I loaded it on my Panasonic Toughbook CF-27 w/300MHz cpu and it handles the pcmcia combo card (modem & nic) and I am on the Internet. http://foxhurricane.com which is a challenging site! My laptop shows 158MB of memory, 101MB used. Need to load crqlog and see if the serial-USB interface is being handled OK. Great job so far! Barry - I cannot imagine Puppy without you. I worry for the future after 4.1 :-(
MD5 Sum One Click Check
Username: Geow
" I have implemented a simple script: 1. Move to folder that has md5 and iso 2. Click on md5 It checks the MD5 sum without you needing to type the name. Here is the thread: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=33340 Wolf Pup has turned it into a .pet: http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/geow_md5_checker-1.5.pet 5 clicks to install the .pet - then 1 click to check the MD5 Has been getting good reviews - Lobster thinks it should be in Puppy. I would be honored if it were. But either way, it should be installed to use on the next release. GeoW
