I'm back!

I was pretty much on the go the whole time, only ever got online once and then only for 15 minutes.
Anyway, an update. I did manage to put in about one or two hours per day on Woof, so there has been progress. I have some other jobs to do in Perth for a couple of days, but I'll ramp up the Woof project now.
Mostly what I have been doing is tidying up the "template" folders in the Woof Unleashed tarball, so what was a 20MB download for v0.0.2 is likely to be much much less for 0.0.3.
I have been fixing bugs too. Unfortunately, I discovered that libgs had been left out of 0.0.2, and that file is 6MB (ubuntu pkg, uncompressed) which blows out the size of the iso -- so, I am seriously thinking of going for a lighter web browser than SeaMonkey (that will please Sage). Not Opera though, perhaps Galeon or Epiphany, plus Bluefish for web page editing, Sylpheed for email.
For Epiphany, Ubuntu offers two versions, with Gecko or Webkit render engines. Either should be much smaller than SeaMonkey I think.

You might also consider FirePup, which is a cut down version of Firefox. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34876 Welcome back :)

"Lob. does us a disservice! Any recommendation needs to be dispassionate: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=37369 Notwithstanding, since you already have Netsurf installed for Help and it works, maybe the best strategy would be to provide just one basic browser, even Dillo, and concentrate on keeping .pet s of all viable alternatives up-to-date and available via the icon, even if that were to include Opera? How much code does Netsurf need from its big brother?
Not Galeon

"Netsurf has no big brother, that I'm aware of. It is standalone. Scratch Galeon, it seems hasn't been updated since 2006. But, Skipstone is a contender.
Printer problem

"Welcome back! I've enjoyed playing with Woof but I ran into problems trying to configure my Apollo P-1200 printer. The menu entries for CUPS Manage Printing and CUPS Printer Wizard don't work. I get a 404 Not Found message when I select them. Is there something missing in woof002? I got the printer working in Boxpup412 by adding the P-1200.ppd to /etc/cups/ppd and adding an entry for it in /etc/cups/printers.conf . This hasn't worked for me in woof002. On the vexed question of browsers : I would prefer Opera but I can understand why you may not want to do that. I am currently running Opera 10 alpha on Woof. From version 10 it has an auto-update feature which will be helpful for Puppy/Opera fans. Alternatively, a slimmed down Firefox would do as a default.

""And I must repeat again, please please do not report any bugs! I don't want to know." Notwithstanding, so early, it would be unwise to dismiss Opera 10: http://www.opera.com/browser/next/ quite apart from the ongoing survey.

"Yes Opera would be in first place by the latest poll, unless you add the FirePup votes to Firefox then Firefox would be in the lead by 1 vote, lol I would probably go with Firefox,2.20 with The wysiwyg plugin and simple mail plugin, combined around 9MB pet package. ttuuxxx

"also when I compiled midori last year the pet was 9MB, I had to compile the whole Qt to get the parts I needed for webkit, it took hours and wasn't all that stable, but Since then Midori has had a lot of updates and could be worth having a look at also. Plus I'm sure if Barry compiled it, it would be around 7MB :) ttuuxxx

"Does firefox 2.0.0.7 need libgs ? To win more place, I would remove intel modems and gnumeric and psip, pmusic...
Ephiphany is OK
Username: rarsa
"I use Ephiphany in my older box and it's substantially faster than Firefox with very few sites not showing correctly. Actually I even installed it on my larger box because I got tired of how slow FF appears. When I just need speed and not looks, nothing beats "links".

"Welcome back, Barry! I just discovered that FlashBlock extension in Firefox is a good way to keep it running full-speed (am using version 2.0.0.20). http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=37633 (Links to test videos are provided there, too.) There is also a chat extension (already implemented in FirePup). Anyway, whatever the browser, the media player extension is a cool trick to have.
Media player extension

"Raffy, what is the media player extension? Do you mean the script that MU developed to run gxine to play flash content, so the Adobe flash player is not needed? ...does MU's idea work well? Woof has the Adobe flash player, taking that out would be great, as it's about 6MB I think.

"VitalBodies created an Inkscape Puppy Linux License Plate! This was created in FUN. I do not use puppy but use Ubuntu. Why? We just heard about Puppy from a guest writer on our blog. We like the plate and it is fun. ...But If it seems lame to you I will remove it. One comment: It is not that intuitive to find banners to promote Puppy Linux. We actually had to have pop under ads to even come with ANYTHING. We are more than willing to use the current banner if you have one. Would our plate help your cause and add some fun? Blog post about Puppy: http://vitalbodies.wordpress.com/2009/01/13/getting-puppy-linux-and-windows-2000-to-play-nice-on-an-ibm-thinkpad/ This is not intended as spam but a fun sharing...
But, Skipstone is a contender.

"Based on the poll, this would be the quickest way to become persona non grata! I used the mediaplayer extension in Firefox on one of the major distros (can't remember which?). It worked well, but afterwards, I was left wondering whether it was actually necessary and perhaps I could've arrived at the same result direct from the relevant website? The extension creates a large panel down the lhs.

"Quote Barry: "..media player extension? Do you mean the script that MU developed to run gxine to play flash content..". Yes, that's the idea (it's good to hear about that work by MU), but the media player extension can also handle other media formats. If MU's work can be expanded for that, then let's use it. I don't know exactly how the extension works, but tempestuous uses mozplugger plugin in Firefox.

"No, I wrote no extension. It is just a small script looking up, if a video encapsulated in a flashcontainer was clicked. The video can be found in /tmp/, so the script looks up there. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34008 Not very elegant, just better than nothing. Mark

"Mark, I see that mikeb has built up something out of your initial work - this is really a good idea for getting and playing media from whatever browser (but the browser must allow for copying of the video's URL). Maybe mozplugger is the advanced version of this work? Mozplugger is for Mozilla browsers: http://linux.die.net/man/7/mozplugger
