Karmic Puppy: first build

I'm running "Karmic Puppy" right now. This is Puppy built from Ubuntu Karmic Koala packages.

Working nicely!

One thing though, most annoying, have got that periodic screen flicker. This happens with Intel video hardware and arrived with Xorg 7.4.
I did manage to get rid of it in a Jaunty build, by using a later Intel Xorg driver, but later when I tested an early version of Karmic, the flicker was back. Now, with the final release of karmic due out on the 29th of this month, the flicker is still there.

Anyway, apart from that, this pup is running fine. A bit fatter than your usual pup of course, with all those dependencies -- this build is 113MB with the SCSI and big-analog-modem drivers removed.

There are a few things that I want to improve, which I'll work on for a few more days.

I might look into compiling a Intel Xorg driver out of subversion.

"When I state "working nicely", that does not mean it is anywhere near release-quality. I'm sure that I will find lots of problems as I play with it. So if I do upload an iso soon it will just be a snapshot, pre-alpha quality, use on an as-is basis. My attention mostly is on Woof itself, not to get all the bugs out of a specific compatible-distro live-CD build.

"The Intel driver problem is a major fail for Karmic (and Linux in general), just as Windows gets its act together with Windows 7. I read elsewhere (Distrowatch?) that Eebuntu will be changing its base to Debian unstable.

In fact, I have been running karmic puppy since that time. The only major problem that I have now is that for some unknown reasons to me, not all settings are saved after shutdown. The sooner Woof becomes the means of building Puppy from *your* favorite distro, the sooner you can choose. And as Barry keeps repeating, he's devoting this time to Woof development, not a newer, better Puppy. Don't wait for the next Upup. You will be disappointed. It's only as a means of testing Woof.

No SW is perfect - enough left in Puppy to see us all out." its about threading the needle to catch that which has gone before and incorporate that past effort into the beauty of puppy. its about getting rid of the re-invention of the wheel each time something needs to be done that has already been done satisfactorily in the past or elsewhere. freeing up human resources that would be spent on duplication to aim them at further new innovative improvements instead.
