Hacking Pwireless2
January 07, 2010 —
BarryK
There are some issues with putting Jemimah's Pwireless2 beta2.7 into Quirky.
Jemimah has included binary executables from 'gtrayicon', 'dhcpcd' and 'wpa_supplicant' packages inside Pwireless2. That is not acceptable for me, so I am in the process of providing those packages as separate PETs.
dhcpcd
I recently compiled version 5.1.3. There are problems with using this with Pwireless2. I configured like this:
./configure --libexecdir=/lib/dhcpcd --dbdir=/var/lib/dhcpcd --sysconfdir=/etc
as this is the posix recommended layout, as stated in the dhcpcd docs. However, jemimah has left the db-directory as /var/db, the execdir as /usr/libexec and the binary executables are in /usr/local/sbin whereas I have them in /usr/sbin -- and Jemimah's scripts have hardcoded paths for the excutables (which she probably did to avoid using old executables (?)).
I have created a dhcpcd PET package with symlinks, which fixes most of the problems. However, /var/db is used by something else and I cannot make that into a symlink. Umm, it seems only /root/Startup/Pwireless2 explicitly addresses /var/db, so I request that another line be inserted in the script:
rm -f /var/db/dhcpcd*
rm -f /var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd*
Oh, I have just looked in Jemimah's /etc/dhcpcd.conf, it has this line:
denyinterfaces lo,ppp0,wmaster0
...hmmm, I need to put this on hold until after further discussion with Jemimah and others. Um, wouldn't it be better, if dhcpcd.conf is modified in a manner that may adversely affect other uses (like ppp0 dialup), that the dhcpcd executable be called with "--config <alternate config file>"? The dhcpcd commandline also allows "--denyinterfaces <comma-delimited list>".
wpa_supplicant
Jemimah has configured this differently from the one already in Puppy or Quirky. She has sent me the configure details but I have not yet got onto that. For the record, this is the .config file that she has sent me:
# Example wpa_supplicant build time configuration
#
# This file lists the configuration options that are used when building the
# hostapd binary. All lines starting with # are ignored. Configuration option
# lines must be commented out complete, if they are not to be included, i.e.,
# just setting VARIABLE=n is not disabling that variable.
#
# This file is included in Makefile, so variables like CFLAGS and LIBS can also
# be modified from here. In most cases, these lines should use += in order not
# to override previous values of the variables.
# Uncomment following two lines and fix the paths if you have installed OpenSSL
# or GnuTLS in non-default location
#CFLAGS += -I/usr/local/openssl/include
#LIBS += -L/usr/local/openssl/lib
# Some Red Hat versions seem to include kerberos header files from OpenSSL, but
# the kerberos files are not in the default include path. Following line can be
# used to fix build issues on such systems (krb5.h not found).
#CFLAGS += -I/usr/include/kerberos

I will make a config file for Pwireless2 to solve the executable hard-coded location problem. I did do that so as not to break things with the Network Wizard (which in Puppy 4.3.1 and earlier uses different/incompatible versions of wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd) and make it so Pwireless2 can be uninstalled. It's no problem move the /etc/dhcpcd.conf file and fix the compile configuration issues as well. I'll add this change to 2.8. Not having ppp in the denyinterfaces breaks ppp completely for me, since dhcpcd tries to overwrite the IP that wvdial sets up. Are there instances where'd you'd want dhcpcd messing with your ppp connection? In any case, you can now configure that from within the Pwireless2 gui. Pwireless2 works differently than Network Wizard in that it starts up a dhcpcd on boot up that automatically configures your ethernet interfaces when it detects a carrier. With network wizard, nothing happens unless you run the wizard and configure it. So with Pwireless2 you have to deny any interfaces that you don't want dhcpcd to auto configure or it will do stuff you don't want. I think where you're running into problems with wpa_supplicant is CONFIG_DEBUG_FILE. This adds the -f option so debug output can be logged to a file. I imagine you might be interested in compiling without debug support since that shrinks the executable significantly. However, I need it turned on at the moment, so I can get useful bug reports from users and for my own debugging. We might need to modify Pwireless2 for Quirky. If you send me the .config that you want to use, I can make the necessary modifications.
