Hey Hey is back!

The first episode of Hey Hey It's Saturday screened last night, on Wednesday! Apart from two reunion episodes last year, there was a break of 10 years, prior to which the show ran almost continuously for 25 years.

If you're in the USA, I don't know what your equivalent would be over there, if any. Do you have a popular variety show, where the team just ham it up right through (2+ hours), supposedly a family show but the humour gets a bit risqué. Lots of jokes (usually very weak and old), comedy skits and general silliness. Guest musicians, usually the big names passing through. Performance competition by non-professionals, lottery wheel, funny photos submitted by public. The co-host is an ostrich. Screens live, so any bloopers go to air.

Barry, After viewing several episodes on YouTube, I can say there is nothing exactly like it here in the US. It's looks like "The Gong Show" meets "Late Show with David Letterman" . Well sorta... SNL would be the best current match, but it's not a family show like Hey Hey. SNL airs at 11:30 PM for a reason. Would like to see it syndicated here. Think it would go over quite well!

"I was watching TV late one night, and surprised when the David Letterman Show came on. For the last several years I was not able to receive commercial TV channels, so got out of touch with what is going on. Recently installed satellite TV, now get two commercial channels, get to see stuff like V and Lost (final series, very confusing as I haven't been following it since series 1). But David Letterman, wow, he goes back a long way. Just checked: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Late_Show_with_David_Letterman ...actually he goes back to 1983, with NBC, switched to CBS in 1993. Yeah Letterman's show has some features in common with Hey Hey. House band, some voice-over, guest musicians, short interviews, some weak jokes, live audience.

Screens live, so any bloopers go to air."[/b] well my vote to the closest programming that matches is MAD TV and Saturday Night Live, both of these are live broadcast that closely match your request. Both of these aire on Saturday Night in US, and both are on late-night to avoid the Prudish population of USA. Also it is to avoid US politicians going after the broadcasters who always seem to pulling the bible out for any activity that they jump on to further their careers. Our populace is a "ways" behind the rest of the world and politicians use our infancy to their advantage. If Hey-hey was here in the US during evenings between 7-11 PM, our US politicians and the people who follow them would drive it off the air..... Sad, huh.
