Quirky: streaming audio "problem"
April 12, 2010 —

Quirky 018 testers have reported that mms streaming audio does not work.
So, I ran 'pupradio' in a terminal, clicked on the first button (rock radio channel I think), and no sound. FAAD was spitting out a lot of error messages.
Tried again, same thing. Tried again -- this time it worked.
Booted Quirky on another PC, pupradio worked first time.
Rebooted on my main laptop, the one that had earlier-on exhibited the problem, with 'pfix=ram', connected to Internet, pupradio worked first time!
So, what to make of that?
Well, you guys who have the problem, can you please start 'pupradio' in a terminal, if error messages start then hit the 'Stop' button immediately (coz in my case the error msgs repeated very fast, and I want to see what gets printed just before the error msg). Kindly post the info.

"I ran both pupradio and mplayer in a terminal window with this url: mms://thegulch.shacknet.nu:5119/Gulch Neither one would play it. I have posted the terminal window contents for both pupradio and mplayer on page 11 of the Quirky 018 feedback item in the forum.
PupRadio stations

"I want to make sure that it was not a server side problem. I found that two of pupradio stations, CFGP and KNIK are mms streams. These two stations with pupradio do not have audio with my Acer Asprie Revo with Audio Adapter identified by hard info as HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia. Could it be a problem with my audio?

"I mentioned in a few forum posts that mms streams can not be enabled in the new Seamonkey using about:config. I also started having serious problems keeping a wireless connection with Quirky; so I booted live cd, trashed and deleted the Seamonkey files. I installed Seamonkey 1.1.15-v1 pet, loaded Flash 10, enabled mms in about:config, and remastered. Now I'm not having any mms audio or video stream problems with stations that are actually broad- casting. My wireless signal is now rock solid.

"Hmmm, I don't see how rolling back SM fixed your wireless connection. But that about:config thing is a problem. I'm seriously thinking of compiling SM 1.1.19, the very last of the 1.x series, and use that in Quirky and Wary.
mms streams and SM 2.0.4

"What a bummer. I put this into SM's prefs.js:
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mms", "/usr/bin/gnome-mplayer"); user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.rtsp", "/usr/bin/gnome-mplayer");
And when I tried to go to an mms:// site, up popped a message "mms is not a registered protocol".

"It seems to be a problem with the latest Firefox too, especially 64 bit versions I learned the about:config method from a Firefox, Kaffeine cinlug.org post more than a year ago. Found it worked well with Seamonkey, using Vlc, Mplayer, and fairly good with Gxine. Gxine wasn't quite as good at showing all the video streams. It sure is nice with Quirkys' gnome-mplayer.
