Quirky 1.1

May 16, 2010 — BarryK
I am pleased to announce the released of Quirky 1.1. Briefly:

The main focus was to fix bugs in 1.0, but I also upgraded many applications. Most importantly, SeaMonkey has migrated from the 1.x series, after we solved some bugs with the 2.x series. JWM is now the default window manager and tray, as it is noticeably faster (and looks nicer) than Openbox/Fbpanel. Two showstoppers were Ayttm and You2pup did not work, both fixed.

Bug report: Nvidia
A little bug snuck through. If you have nvidia hardware, the default 'nvidia' Xorg driver works for most people. However, in some cases the basic 'nv' driver works better. The Xorg Wizard allows you to choose either one, however the code has a bug. Type at the console (if X not runing):
# mp /usr/sbin/xorgwizard
...change line 97 to this: "rmmod nvidia"
...change line 109 to this: "modprobe nvidia"
In other words, the operation is being swapped. Then run xorgwizard:
# xorgwizard
...and it should work properly to choose between the 'nvidia' or 'nv' drivers.

Bug report: Intel
My blog documents the disappointing saga of the Intel Xorg drivers. With Quirky 1.x, which uses Xorg 7.5, we have a situation where some Intel video hardware no longer works. You will have to use the generic 'vesa' driver (slow). The only solution is to roll back to an earlier version of Xorg, 7.3, as used in Puppy 4.3.1. Also, "Wary Puppy" uses Xorg 7.3 -- this is the same as Quirky except for the older Xorg -- expect a final release of Wary soon.

Hi Barry I have been playing with the retro version for a little while. Very nice on my young fellow's lenovo R61e. Main reason for using the retro on that particular machine is that the skype sfs was crashing with the webcam (an usb webcam, tried a couple of them; particular to that machine), actually with 2.6.33 the webcam was crashing the system with any webcam app. Weird, but hey, horses for courses. I also installed Iron browser on that machine (it needs a glibc.dbus package from disciple to work, I made thread about it). My son loved the Chromium browser in Lupu but also wanted Skype. Kids! So I (he) eagerly awaited this retro version. Thanks Cheers"16 May 2010, 18:21"01596"115.64.206.145'glibc.dbus where"broomdodger"Where is glibc.dbus to be downloaded? Username: 16 May 2010, 22:15

But choosing nv works... so why does the bug Barry explained seem to not affect me?"17 May 2010, 8:15"01596"123.100.79.11'Re Nvidia bug"BarryK"disciple, it is really only a buglet. When you reran the Xorg Wizard and choose 'nv', the nvidia kernel module would have been left loaded, which apparently does not affect 'nv' driver. However, if you had run the Wizard yet again and gone back to 'nvidia' Xorg driver, the nvidia kernel module would have got unloaded then it wouldn't have worked at all. Username: 17 May 2010, 8:30

"01596"64.111.91.181'Success!"prehistoric"This finally gives rock-solid video on a problematic machine with SiS video which even shows glitches under Windoze. I'll test on some more machines with Intel video as opportunity presents. There may be a minor bug in unmounting USB flash drives. I just moved an sfs file (using a flash drive) to a machine running Quirky. After copying it from there to the internal hard drive, I unmounted the flash drive using the right click option on the drive icon. The blinking light on the flash drive never did want to quit, even though nothing was being written to the flash drive and the copy to the internal drive was complete. As I suspected it was safe to remove the drive, I rebooted the machine, using the shutdown menu, and, sure enough, the light stopped blinking immediately. "17 May 2010, 22:00"01596"68.203.76.50'pppoe connection"wuwei"Barry I am running Quirky 1.1 almost flawlessly on my PC, including the nvidia driver in xorgwizard. There is one strange bug, though. The pppoe connection established via Roaring Penguin cannot be maintain during reboots. The same goes for Lupu 5.0 and I have reported about this in that bug thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=419473#419473 Hope you can find an answer, particularly because 432v3 doesn't have this problem at all. So there must be something that changed between 432v3 and Lupu/Quirky. Thanks and a Good Day to Downunder"18 May 2010, 14:34"01596"85.180.227.147'more pppoe"wuwei"Hi Barry just wanted to verify my previous findings on the pppoe connection. So I did a fresh frugal install of both versions of Quirky, the regular with kernel 2.6.33 and the retro version with kernel 2.6.30. In both cases I went through the setup but once the desktop was reached I didn't do anything else but establish the pppoe connection. Here are the results: Quirky with kernel 2.6.33: autoDHCP by Internet Connection Wizard Setup in Roaring Penguin; Start in RP; Seamonkey shows web pages. Symlink in /root/Startup to /usr/sbin/pppoe-start_shell Reboot open SM, no internet connection open Roaring Penguin, click on Status, pppoe is (supposedly) up; contrary to SM showing no connection; click on Stop click on Start connection established, SM shows web pages. So far, this is what I reported earlier. Next Quirky with kernel 2.6.30: [without nvidia drivers desktop opens with a 5mm shift to the left; but that is just a side issue and can be corrected by the proper nVidia driver] autoDHCP by Internet Connection Wizard Setup in Roaring Penguin; Start in RP; Seamonkey shows web pages. Symlink in /root/Startup to /usr/sbin/pppoe-start_shell Reboot open SM, no internet connection open Roaring Penguin, click on Status, pppoe is (supposedly) up; contrary to SM showing no connection; click on Stop click on Start connection timed out ! need to go through Setup procedure again; just as after the first boot, then SM shows web pages. So, retro is even worse than the regular Quirky. That doesn't bother me too much, but I thought you should know. Also, my experiment shows that it is not the kernel change from 2.6.30 to 33 that brought about this problem. ttuuxxx's 432v3 is based on kernel 2.6.30, as well. So where is the bug hidden?"18 May 2010, 21:03"01596"92.228.21.133'Various things"Firewave"I ran into Quirky just a few days ago and so far I have been very pleased, but I ran into a few issues: - .mkv files aren't asociated with mplayer, although it can play them - mplayer sometimes doesn't go to fullscreen, but just to the upper corner of the screen and the shortcuts (C, F) aren't working most of the time - it seems when the network connection is being disconnected (e.g. router restarting) while the system is running it's not able to restore the the connection - it is not possible to mount the root (/) of a windows computer/samba share. doing some will also result in an irremovable entry in the share list - seamonkey is a bit annoying since it has no buttons to close a tab and you always have to use the right-click menu. - a vnc client would be nice, but the realvnc.com linux version standalone is working so fine, so it's not really a priority - the Inetnet Connection Wizard suggests to use the Simple Network Setup, but that won't see the wireless LAN settings you made, so you have to use the Network Wizard"19 May 2010, 17:00"01596"79.218.18.218'SM tab close"BarryK"[i]seamonkey is a bit annoying since it has no buttons to close a tab and you always have to use the right-click menu.
