Fernando sent me an email that the source for the Xorg driver needed in the Gecko Edubook netbook has been uploaded:
Deviceonchip have released the video driver with their sources!!!

I will test it in the Distro I'm working on
http://lihuen.linti.unlp.edu.ar/, I hope to see it working in Puppy as
well.
Best Regards,
Fernando
It compiles in Spup 0.4, so next thing I will do is test it on a Gecko.

Unneeded package in WoofUsername: Iguleder
Barry, why don't you remove the autologin package from Woof? /etc/inittab could use "login -f root" instead."11 Jul 2010, 14:20"01720"109.66.40.181'GTK2 font"Iguleder"Sorry for annoying you like this, but I found another improvement to Woof. By default, the system font is not set, so it drops to the default of a font that does not exist in Puppy. I made my remastering tool write this /root/.gtkrc-2.0:
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT include "/usr/share/themes/<SELECTED THEME>/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" style "user-font" { font_name = "DejaVu Sans 12" } widget_class "*" style "user-font" gtk-font-name="DejaVu Sans 12" include "/root/.gtkrc.mine" # -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
This way it forces DejaVu Sans 12, the de-facto Linux font (which comes with Puppy). It fixes all font issues with Opera and makes the Raleigh theme work as it should. Also, Barry, why don't you put the "normal" DejaVu Sans fonts instead of the LGC ones? They cause problems (squares instead of letters) with many languages, such as Arabic and Hebrew. The difference in size is very very small."11 Jul 2010, 15:26"01720"109.66.40.181'RDC Xorg driver works"BarryK"I have just tested Spup with the RDC Xorg driver on the Gecko, and it works. I have issues with the 2.6.34.1 kernel though: 1. sound I applied the Vortex86mx patch, but afterward I upgraded ALSA to 1.0.23 -- which has overridden the ALSA patched for the Gecko. 2. wireless The wireless network driver has loaded, but doesn't work. 3. Shutdown The Gecko will not power-off. This has re-confirmed that the kernel has to be configured for uniprocessor, not SMP, to power-off. Well, I do have a kernel that has all the above 3 working. It was 2.6.33-git7, and what I will have to do is release a special Spup with that kernel. ...I'll do that, to bring this Gecko thing to a conclusion. The only thing that will not work is the battery monitor, but that is a physical limitation of the hardware -- I will build the special Spup without the battery monitor. Username: 12 Jul 2010, 6:39
"01720"114.129.167.148'Video driver"Fernando"A co-worker tested it on Lihuen 3 (a Debian Lenny based distro) and it works even better than the previous version (I mean the version that was released only with the binary which I tested on WattOS). The previous version works fine with VLC and not with mplayer, but the current one show a much better performance with mplayer."15 Jul 2010, 8:21"01720"201.255.172.189'power-off"pskin"Hi, I know that this is belated, but in case anyone is still interested I thought I'd report that I was able to get pup-431-edubook (which has the smp kernel) to power off on shutdown by appending the following line to /etc/modprobe.conf options apm smp=1 power_off=1 I am using the bios version which has become known as the apm bios. Probably not many people are using pup-431-edubook any more, but I am hoping the same trick (which I found at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/69880 ) might work for other versions.

"pskin, Thanks for that info. I wonder if that will solve the power-off problem for some other older PCs? This is interesting enough that I have put it in as default in Woof. I have created file /etc/modprobe.d/apm with this in it: options apm smp=1 power_off=1 It will be great if I no longer have to compile uniprocesor kernels, then can standardise on a smp kernel. The next wary will have this.
