Rockwell modem works

This is actually another HCF chip. It is Rockwell International, HCF 56k Data/Fax/Voice/Spkp (w/Handset) Modem, chip 127a:1005.

I am online using it right now.

I have a box of old modems, eight of them. Testing today, 4 of them work. Well, if you count the one that disconnects a few seconds after getting online.

In addition, there is the Agere modem in my laptop, and PcTel modem in another of my old PCs, both of which work.

So that is 6 out of 10, not a bad success rate...

HP Media Center m7160n After installing grub4dos Wary098 started with no problem, but when starting Windows XP the System Recover appeared. I shutdown and checked the menu.lst and it was the same as a Dell notebook similarly configured. I was able to open System Console but these did not fix it: fixmba fixboot I let System Recover run, did all the MS updates and tried again with the same result ;( I did not lose any data, but it is a PITA. Any idea how to gracefully recover?

"Grub4dosconfig should have backed up your MBR to a file called sda_mbr.bak (or similar) on your boot partition. You should be able to restore with: [code] cat sda_mbr.bak > /dev/sda [/code] I'll look into this some more. If there is an issue it was likely caused by some code I gave shinobar. Sorry about that.

"Why anyone wants to make a full install of grub or grub4dos on a Windows machine when they still want Windows to work is beyond me. Even though shinobar is a fine developer he didn't get it right first time and here is someone else with an MBR problem. All that is needed an on XP machine is to copy the grldr file, (from grub4dos), hook it into the Windows boot process and create your menu.lst. You still have the functionality of grub4dos for loading multiple OS BUT you don't mess with the MBR or alter how Windows boots - making it less prone to the type of failure here. "Oops - cannot edit posts here. What I should have said above is ... here is someone else who has lost their ability to boot Windows after installing full grub4dos. (I guess it might be a menu.lst problem - not necessarily an MBR problem)

grub and Lin'N'Win

"I had trouble with grub4dos on this particular machine, HP Media Center m7160n. I do not know if it was the MBR or the menu.lst. I tried fixmbr, fixboot and many different menu.lst settings with no joy. Previously on several other machines I installed grub or grub4dos no problem. Not being able to gracefully recover the WinXP install, I let System Recover do its thing, grrr, then all the Windows updates and hours later the WinXP is running again. I lost time but no data, well this PC tower is going to a friend so there really was not much to lose. That said, I ALWAYS want the option to boot Windows or Linux, though Linux is where I work. I do not understand why anyone would choose to do a grub[4dos] install that would write the MBR, NOW that I know there is a safer and simpler alternative! Thank you for all the suggestions, especially "Lin'N'Win". <http://www.icpug.org.uk/national/linnwin/step00-linnwin.htm> Next task... restore the MBR on a working grub install and change to "Lin'N'Win".

Malicious act from DELL

"Hello! This is Tinybit. Thanks for your using grub4dos. I am directed to here by google. I was one of the maintainers of grub4dos. Recently I received quite a lot of report from users, saying that DELL had placed a file (also)named GRLDR in one of its hidden primary partitions(in the root dir). When this GRLDR is loaded, it will display some failure information, and then hangup. Some of the reporters say it is DELL's malicious act, and it aims to block GRLDR from grub4dos, but the reporters don't know why. As a workaround you may rename your good GRLDR to another name, e.g., MSLDR, and then problem solved. For "How to rename GRLDR", please refer to README_GRUB4DOS.txt.
