SeaMonkey 2.1-beta2

March 16, 2011 — BarryK
I have compiled SeaMonkey 2.1 beta2 in Wary. Using it now. It took me a very long time. I upgraded these packages:

pcre 8.12
glib 2.28.3
sqlite3 3.7.5
pixman 0.18.4
cairo 1.10.2

There are particular requirements in configuring/compiling those packages so that SM can use them -- I will document the steps soon, and how I configured SM.

This SM is probably not quite ready for prime-time. I found one problem right-off -- started Composer, opened a file, clicked in it, but no text-insertion cursor appeared. I clicked here and there in the text and after a short while the cursor did appear.

Oh man, this SM is big. The bzip2 package is 18MB, compared with the SM 2.0.11 PET at 12MB (that is gzipped, would probably be about 9-10MB if bzip2-ed).

It does have webM support builtin, not using system libogg/libvpx -- which is a shame.

Anyway, time here is almost 1.00am, so I'll retired for the night.

Got a segmentation fault after using it for about 5 minutes. It isn't satisfactory. I'll try again when beta3 is released.

No crash

"I have been running SM 2.1b2 for a couple of hours this morning, no crash. But, I was at a real estate site that has a popup window that allows to scroll through pictures of a property -- this always worked before, but now I only get the first picture and if try to scroll the window freezes or quits. Another thing, this SM is a resource hog. I have 8 tabs open and when I switch tab, there is a lot of hard drive activity, sometimes noticeable delay. My laptop has 512MB RAM plus swap partition -- not much by today's standards, but it was fine for the older SM.

SM scrolling good

"Oh, I should mention the good news. The particular real estate site that I mentioned above, has a nasty problem with SM 2.0.11 -- if I click the scroll down-arrow or up-arrow, it slowly and jerkily scrolls to the end of the page -- very slowly, can't do anything until it has finished. Others have also reported scrolling problems with 2.0.11. SM 2.1b2 scrolls nicely, at least on the real estate site.
