Puppy Linux 1.0.8r1 archive

I have uploaded my development files for Puppy Linux 1.0.8r1. This was the last of the 1.x series, then we jumped to Puppy 2.x series.

Ah, they were the days! I built a "Chubby Puppy" with Mozilla browser suite and OpenOffice -- total size of live-CD was 92MB!

Due to having lost much of my archived files, I realised that this old Puppy series was only on one DVD, so before I lose that too, I decided to upload it. Perhaps someone might want to play with it.

"I actually downloaded all the files in about 2 hours. I did this for two reasons. First, I wanted to make sure they survived. But the second is that the source gives me more insight into the original building process of a master. I plan on trying it on a very old Toshiba Laptop with 333mhz processor and 32megs ram. This laptop was not upgradeable to even 128 megs without problems according to Toshiba.

"Chubby booted my 1.6GHz/1GB RAM P4 machine of that era without any issues and was a pleasure to use. A testament to puppy's stunning beginning. I'm running Puppy_525 on the same machine and can verify the amazing progress. What is more striking is the comparison with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS running on this machine too. Is crawling compared to 525 and on daily use has nothing more to offer.

"Well, June is passing - Happy Anniversary, Puppy/Barry. :) Puppy 1.08r1 ran the server in a small high school that pioneered a teacher's self-administered computer lab here (Philippines) in 2006. It is a Pentium II 300 mhz with 128 MB RAM.

In the car park I noticed a kid smashing a large pile of objects with a hammer and throwing the pieces into a skip. When I went over I found that they were obsolete but unused laptops, complete with brand new satchels. It seems they didn't match up to the headmaster's requirements. When I got home later I found to my astonishment that several of the laptops had somehow fallen into the boot of my car. If only to prove that smashing them was a senseless waste (they make brilliant e-book readers if nothing else),I have tried every brand of Puppy on them ever since, and failed (I'm a complete novice). Failed until now that is. When 8-bit mentioned his old Toshiba laptop I decided to try with with mine. It worked and now I have a fantastic little laptop ready for anything!! 8-bit I hope you got yours going. Thanks again Barry (we met at the Show by the way). Thanks 8-bit.

can't boot puppy1 with grub

"I want to play a bit with this old puppy:). Try to do the simple procedure like i do with every puppy - mount iso and copy three files into one folder for frugal install. Then i add some lines into menu.lst and never have problems to boot. But with puppy 1 i get error - can not find root. Where there any special grub options to add ?

So the schools these days are teaching that if something is too old for you then it should be destroyed to make sure no one else can use it. What a disgrace. Whatever happened to "reduce, reuse, recycle"?
