xf86-video-vesa 2.3.0 crashes

September 15, 2011 — BarryK
When I recompiled everything in T2, I used the latest xf86-video-vesa, 2.3.0. I used this for both the Xorg 7.3 compile and the Xorg 7.6 compile.

Running the standard Wary, that is with Xorg 7.3, I was getting strange behaviour with the vesa driver. On two out of three computers tested, the desktop came up okay, but clicking anywhere crashed X. X did log a message to /tmp/xerrs.log that it was "waiting to exit" or words to that effect, but no information anywhere about why it was waiting to exit.

I found that rolling back to xf86-video-vesa 1.3.0 fixed it, at least on one PC tested so far.

I just checked Debian Lenny, they use xserver-xorg-video-vesa 1.3.0. Lenny is an Xorg 7.3+ system.

However, the Xorg 7.6 Mega package has vesa 2.3.0 in it.

Same behavior with new inexpensive laptop

Try old vesa

"Raffy, Try an experiment, install an old vesa driver. The old version 1.3.0 for Wary is here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/pet_packages-wary5/xf86-video-vesa-1.3.0-w5.pet It is compiled for Xorg 7.3, so I don't know if it would have any problems with Xorg 7.5+. But, it would be an interesting experiment. Install it, exit from X and restart X. Don't do it on a save-file that has important stuff that you need to keep.

No luck

"No luck there, Barry. I installed the pet in an Atom PC then booted the fusion laptop with "pfix=vesa". It can't launch X but dropped to console. When I ran xorgwizard-old (no xorgwizard in Fatdog64-520), it can't get past "Probing". (Additional: While tweaking X in the other machine, I noted that xorgwizard-old has no Vesa option.) ozsouth, older kernels are not an option for me because of the new network devices in the AMD Fusion E350/emachines D443 laptop.

"Raffy, Yes, my new laptop is the same, the eth0 port needs the 'tg3' driver in the 2.6.39.x kernel, it doesn't work in the 2.6.32.x kernel -- though perhaps support could be backported. the wlan0 wireless port works with the old kernel though, and that is all I need.

"Raffy, Yeah, I forgot, the Xorg server will refuse to load it, as it wasn't compiled to work with that server. ABI-mismatch.
