Racy 5.1.110 (5.2 beta2)

The latest and greatest Racy has arrived! Download from here:

This has the new "first run" Quick Setup. If you would like to create a language translation file for it, please get the latest 'quicksetup' script from here (tiny changes from the one in Racy 5.1.110), gunzip it and place at /usr/sbin:

One difference from the previous Racy, is this time I put the Xorg 'nv' driver into the alternatives directory and left 'nouveau' in the main drivers directory. So, the latter will get used, and if you want to use 'nv' then you will have to run the Xorg Wizard.

I already found a bug. This needs to be inserted at line 749: [i] [ ! -e /etc/localtime ] && DEF_TIMEZONE="" #111027 precaution.[/i] I think that you will only hit this bug if you live in Western Australia.

"Setting resolution to 1024x768 is no better. It is necessary to use Xorgwizard and as I have stated before it sets the wrong parameters so the display is moved right about 1 cm. On my bog standard Intel hardware this can only be corrected by manually editing xorg.conf so that these settings in Section "Monitor" are thus: HorizSync 30.0-80.0 VertRefresh 60.0-75.0 I don't see this problem on any other distro.

"Barry, I like what you've done. And I can see some of the vision you have for us. I don't think you feel that I'm trying to be thorny, but I do want to share something for you to consider. What You and Shinobar presented and what 01Micko is using is a "first run" which is an essential system start. What is a little different between them is the system needs layout. Along with all of the other information, as a systems administrator, I consider Hostname of high importance. You ARE presenting a reasonable approach to Hostname management. But there is a key difference between what is used by 01Micko and what you offer; namely, it is NOT apparent, anywhere, what this PC's hostname is. Its really buried 2 applications, and 3 levels deep for the management of it. I know and can see your efforts to help. And your tools work flawlessly. But, its not apparent as what Shinobar's and 01Micko's presents its users. So as a way of helping, might you consider making Hostname show up somewhere the current hostname. For example, it could be made more obvious in your Network Tool that you're helping us with. That would, at least, make current setting more apparent to the users. I am not trying to be a stickler. I have been involved with networking systems for too many years. The abilty to know/find a system name is and to modify it is a key component of any system one wants to add to their LAN. And, many/most network tools/subsystems/applications use this very important piece of data. For us, in Puppyland, it would be in our best interest to allow Puppy to present this and the management of it as easy as possible for newbies and experienced alike. I know you're addressing this. So take what I share as something to consider. Not as any demand. Hope this helps.

kernel panic after encryption

"It would appear that recent woof builds have problems with heavy encrypted savefiles. When booting from CD and the save file is in an ext2/3 HD on first reboot there are no Desktop image and icons. It requires "gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache" to fix. When the save file is in a USB stick (vfat/ext3) then is much worse. You get kernel panic. This is true for Slacko (see also http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=576929#576929) and Racy 5.1.110

It might be that Xorg sees the lower vertical refresh value as 56 and thinks it is a low-quality monitor. But, that is very low quality, we don't run CRT monitors that low as too much flicker. But, the lower value of 59, does that give you a good result? Running this: # gtf 1024 768 70 calculates horiz freq is 56KHz. Or: # gtf 1024 768 75 calculates horiz freq is 60.1KHz. Both of these are within the ranges of all the above.

"Good, I have made the change. Note, the reason I set a max vertical refresh of 76 is because I have a 21 inch CRT monitor that reports via EDID that it can do 100Hz, so that is what Xorg drives it at, but that doesn't look very good, 75Hz looks better and has no noticeable flicker. Also I think 100Hz is pushing the CRT too hard, consuming more power, reducing it's life.
