RP: sound is broken

July 06, 2012 — BarryK
I cannot get sound to work on the RP. I tried everything described here:
http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting#Sound

I don't get sound from HDMI or the speaker socket.

Here are some RP Forum posts:

So, I'm not the only one. Reading through the RP Troubleshooting section, I guess that I should be thankful that I have got Puppy mostly working, sound only is broken.

Weird, I can't get it work with hdmi but analog was quite straight forward, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=638725#638725 Cheers

"I have tried everything. Even when I do exactly as you guys have done, no sound. I experimented with different mixers, to see if there is some magic setting that will turn it on, no go. I think that sound is broken on my board. Others on the RP Forum have reported no joy with sound, and I am wondering if it is a batch of boards, maybe earlier ones. Anyway, for alpha3 the best that I can do is set things up as you guys have reported works. I will enter 'snd_bcm2835' module in the /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG, to be loaded at bootup. I will create /etc/init.d/09snd_raspi to run that command: amixer cset numid=3 1 If anything else needs doing, let me know. Like for example a better mixer and tray applet. A pity, I would have liked to have got sound out of my board. I have headphones and wondered if there was some problem with them, so went and bought $10 mini-speakers today from Kmart, that power off usb, still no sound. I thought that I might try the Debian distro. I had already downloaded the image dated 19-4-2012, tried that -- what, it doesn't even have alsa-utils installed! No 'amixer', no 'aplay'. Ok, I could install it, but I thought it a bit pathetic that it wasn't already there, considering that they have been working with that distro on the RP since the early alpha-RP-boards, when was that, mid 2011? -- end of complain-mode.

Sound startup

"Um, no, it might have to be /etc/init.d/11snd_raspi, so as to run after the 10alsa script.

"A tray applet for sound may be a difficult one. I can't get alsamixer to lower volume. There must be something special to do for that which may need some research, however gnome-mplayer's volume applet was able to control volume, so it must be possible. I might look at Kevin's source for clues. Maybe a special gtkdialog applet for raspi only? Controlled by a tray icon? I should be able to do that since I wrote Pequalizer, a gtkdialog front-end for alsa-equal.

"> gnome-mplayer's volume applet was able to control volume Gnome-mplayer can do software volume control - presumably you weren't using that?
