Precise Puppy 5.7.1

Precise 5.7 was released only a couple of days ago! Well, we found some bugs, hence 5.7.1 is a bug-fix release.

Here are the main bugs discovered in 5.7, that are now fixed:

1. Non-US keyboards
The first serious bug discovered with 5.7 is that non-US keyboard layouts did not work properly. When X first started, any app then started, such as Geany, type into it, and it is US layout. Quit the app and restart it, then layout is correct.
This happens at every bootup.
Extremely annoying, and we have narrowed the bug down to an Ubuntu DEB from the 'precise-updates' repository, but we don't know which one yet -- I avoided the problem by reverting to the DEBs used to build 5.6.1.

2. External optical media
Another bug with 5.7, when a user plugged in an external USB optical drive, with media inserted, the drive icon did not appear on the desktop. Fixed.

3. Playing DVD videos
In 5.7, when I tried to play a DVD video with Gnome-Mplayer, just got a blank window. Had to mess around in the Preferences, got it to go.
In Puppy, we like things to "just work". Have fixed it, except for peculiar behaviour with DVD menus -- to get those to work properly, and set the correct video-out mode, just open Preferences window then close it -- yep, that's it, just open and close the Preferences!!!

gui filter misses java apps

"As the title says, no case for java apps if they are GUI (probably most of them) in petget. I have a couple in slacko PPM so I'll give them a false one of gtk+2, that should work ok.

Retro version still blowing up on boot on K6-2 500

"Tried running Precise Puppy 5.7.1 Retro on K6-2 500 and it;s still bombing out with a kernel panic at the stage where it's switching root. Appears to be exactly the same problem as I reported earlier - something's not compatible with the K6-2 CPU. Boot was pfix-ram, md5sums matched and disc confirmed working on Pentium D machine. "I've only tested the PAE versions using JamesBond's boot over LAN process from Slacko and LH64. All PCs boot, find video, FirstRUN provides accuracy in getting 32bit PCs on desktop to LAN. All is well, thus far. Thanks for your contribution(s) to us.

"Precise has Pburn 3.7.18, due to the versions of ffmpeg/gtkdialog/cdrkit. later versions of Pburn will, apparently, not work properly in Precise. If you have any issues with Pburn, you need to take it up with the author Zigbert on the Forum.

"Although I realize that the F/W app is NOT created by BarryK, one thing that has come of increased importance is integration of LAN components on home networks. Printers, NAS, xPhones, xPads, xTvs, etc. not to mentions local subsystems services used by many. When testing and researching for problems, the F/W gets in the way for things one is testing inbound and outbound of one's PC. The F/W, though a good one for activation, does make it clear nor has ANY options for turning off the F/W when one wants to test. Its NOT clear how to accomplish this. It is the one normally to the right of your right hand "Windows" key, and it is to bring up context (right-click) menus without using the mouse. It should work in GTK programs for example. If you use it for the JWM menu then you lose this functionality.

"I have found another reason to not re-map the 'Menu' key. Precise 5.7.1 will boot a MacBook, but the MacBook does not have the 'Menu' key. The MacBook does have the 'Apple' (aka 'Command') key, which xev displays as 'Super_L'. That key can then be mapped to the Puppy menu. Still? Does the 'Super_L' (aka 'Windows') key have a function in Puppy Linux?

"That sounds more like a reason not to get a macbook than a reason not to re-map the 'Menu' key :) I don't think there is any common use for a Super key on a standard Puppy. When I ran Puppy I always remapped it to F13 or something and used it for my own JWM keyboard shortcuts - mainly Win-Alt for switching desktops. I currently use it with different bindings in Openbox. Some window managers do try to replicate all the Windows shortcuts which use it.
