libmms 0.6

October 22, 2010 — BarryK
I have compiled this and it will be in the next Wary. But I am not sure why I am putting it in.

Upnorth reported about libmms:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=459703&#459703

...however, libmms seems to be only needed for SeaMonkey/Firefox. My tests below with Mplayer and mplayerplug-in in Wary 0.9 do not need libmms:

This site has embedded stream, and Mplayerplug-in works:
http://www.sonoma.edu/it/videoproduction/streamingtest.shtml

Then feeding the mms stream direct to mplayer also works:

# gmplayer mms://media.sonoma.edu/pinball.wmv

Here is another site with embedded mms stream, mplayerplug-in also works:
http://news.steelers.com/teamPass/support/stream/

The stream is:
mms://69.65.23.160/Roethlisberger_05HoustonPost_340.wmv
...which also works in gmplayer

However, putting "mms://media.sonoma.edu/pinball.wmv" into the URL bar of SeaMonkey I just get "mms is not a registered protocol". Yes, I did try the thing with "about:config".

So, I don't understand what libmms is doing. Does it have to be present when SeaMonkey is compiled? But no, I really don't see what libmms has got to do with SM -- it is only relevant for the external player, and mplayer already has mms support compiled in.

So, maybe I won't put the libmms package in...

Here is some earlier discussion on the topic: http://bkhome.org/archive/blog2/201010/etcmodprobeconf-removed.html

"Whether or not it's included doesn't make any difference to me, as I have the .pet now. This is why I need it for the new browsers: I like Delicast.com; about 2000 mms tv and 10000 mms radio streams. To run the streams I need to enable protocol-handler with about:config and install libmms. Then I go to Squid tv and choose a channel. It asks for a player; I use /usr/bin/gmplayer. After it works in Squid tv, it also works at Delicast.com.

"rjbrewer, Could you please explain, step by step, how you get Wary SM to handle mms with gmplayer? It should not have anything to do with presence or otherwise of libmms. I have followed the instructions posted by you guys, cannot get SM to recognise mms, cannot get mms to appear in "Helper applications".

"With the 4.xx Puppies I just needed about:config set up in Seamonkey or Firefox. With the new Wary Seamonkey: Install libmms .pet. Open about:config right click new string type: network.protocol-handler.app.mms next box type: /usr/bin/gmplayer right click boolean type: network.protocol-handler.expose.mms next box false close Seamonkey Open browser and go to Squid tv I click on France english watch A box pops up asking for a player I search for /usr/bin/gmplayer and open It will then use mplayer for the channels Then I go to Delicast and try an mms stream (usually rtvpink or one of the Nasa channels listed under Science) I didn't need any of this to watch the links you posted I'll boot up a Wary on flash and make sure I didn't skip anything and get back to you.

"rjbrewer, I think that you can skip all of this: Install libmms .pet. Open about:config right click new string type: network.protocol-handler.app.mms next box type: /usr/bin/gmplayer right click boolean type: network.protocol-handler.expose.mms next box false close Seamonkey
