Big kernel experiment

I configured the 3.12.2 kernel with all sound drivers built-in, to see whether the kernel would be able to figure out the right driver for my laptop.
No go, can't get sound to work. It would probably require something on the kernel boot commandline.
So, I am giving up on a big kernel with drivers built-in.
I have now configured the kernel as to make it smaller, compiling it now. There are many options that we are unlikely to need.
First time I compiled 3.12.2, with a "normal" configuration, the kernel 'vmlnuz', gzipped, is 2995KB. That is so big. I recall many years ago when it was under 1MB.
