Chromium SFS updated, Firefox removed

July 26, 2019 — BarryK

I have updated the Chromium SFS for EasyOS, to version 75.0.3770.142. Running Easy, if you click on the "sfsget" icon at top of screen, you can download and install it. If you already have the earlier Chromium SFS installed, I suggest that you delete it first -- see the menu Filesystem -> Easy Container Management.

I need to give some attention to updating of SFSs, that's on the to-do list.

I want the SFSs to be international, that is, have translation for all languages builtin. Chromium does have this. However, Firefox does not. Packages usually have translations as extra packages, or builtin, unfortunately Firefox is a complete build for each language.

That is, it is a 61MB download for en_US, another 61MB for de, and so on. This is appalling. I am already disappointed with the Firefox developers making it increasingly difficult to compile from source. Now this. I am not going to host a Firefox SFS for each language, it is ridiculous. So goodbye Firefox.

Having said that, in future there could be a Firefox downloader, that will download the tarball of the correct language, then convert it to a SFS. Not high on the to-do list though. Chromium works real nice in a container, quite satisfied with it.

It is interesting that SeaMonkey manages to have one tarball with separate language packs. It is built from the same Mozilla code as Firefox, so it can be done.
