Northern first section of the Munda Biddi Trail

February 14, 2021 — BarryK

There are two long trails in WA, running roughly parallel, each about 1000km. The Bibbulmun Track is for walking, the Munda Biddi Trail is for cycling.

The Bibbulmun Track starts at Kalamunda, an outer suburb of Perth, goes east to Mundaring Weir, then further east then turns south, running all the way to the South Coast.

The Munda Biddi Trail starts at Mundaring, another outer suburb, heads south to Mundaring Weir and intersects the Bibbulmun Track, then continues south. Roughly south anyway.

A few times, I have started from Mundaring and walked down the Munda Biddi Trail to the Mundaring Weir Hotel (lunch stop!), then followed the Bibbulmun Track to the first overnight shelter.

But, I was wondering about the shelters on the Munda Biddi Trail, whether they are accessible by foot. Well, yes, but they are further apart. Starting from Mundaring, the first shelter is Carinyah Hut, a distance of 42km.

Though, Carinyah Hut is east of Roleystone, a southern suburb of Perth, so it might be doable to catch a bus to Roleystone then walk to the hut. But that does look like walking most of the way along roads.

There are some very interesting blogs about that first section of the Munda Biddi Trail:

Notice one thing, how frequently those guys crashed their bikes! Like here for example, one spot where Ben crashed, the track looks gentle, however the pea gravel is very slippery:

I think that I would rather amble along on foot, nice and slow, enjoy the scenery.
