Next-generation EasyOS 6.94 V7pre-alpha

June 24, 2025 — BarryK

I have been posting recently about this next-generation EasyOS, built with woofQ2 and "under the bonnet" engine being APT. See these posts:

  • Blueman replaces BluePup in Easy Excalibur — June 22, 2025

  • The new Easy Excalibur works, but there are some issues. I decided to upload it, in case there is anyone out there at this early stage who would like to run it and report bugs ...and maybe even find cause of some. Download from here:

    https://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/woofq2/easyos/

...use 'dd' or one of the GUI drive-image writer tools to write it to a usb-drive, boot up, off you go.

Playing with wallpapers; here is version 6.94 desktop:

...I love arid and semi-arid landscapes, and find this very pleasant to look at. The scene is somewhere in Australia.

Here are the bugs, issues, and assorted strangenesses discovered so far:

    1. Mouse pointer delay, unresponsive for 4-5 seconds after desktop has loaded.
    2. CUPS printing asks for username and password; I had to enter root user and password.
    3. CUPS printing, the web UI cannot determine printer URI and it has to be entered manually.
    4. EasyContainers currently broken, a very strange fault, so EasyOS currently built with containers disabled (notice the lack of container icons in above screenshot).
    5. Samba client only installed, not the server. To test, you will probably have to use APT to install server package.
    6. PKGget currently broken; instead, use APT in a terminal.
    7. Network tray icon sometimes shows as disconnected when actually connected.

...that's all I can recall right now. Some further details...

    3. CUPS printer URI

This is not just a problem with EasyOS, it has afflicted CUPS recent versions. See these posts:

    https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,7079.0.html

    https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups/issues/998

    ...these reports are mid-2024.

The work-around is to find the printer URI manually, like this:

    # lpinfo -l -v

...that's a lower-case letter "l". It will be a great shame if we are stuck with this. In one of the above links, this problem is reported as fixed, but it isn't. CUPS "just works" in earlier EasyOSs.

    6. PKGget broken

It is not exactly broken, but needs to be rewritten as a wrapper around APT. For now, install packages by opening a terminal and use 'apt' directly. Firstly, you will need to do this, to download the Devuan/Debian packages database:

    # apt update

I have tested 'apt', installed some packages, works well. Here are some guides to usage:

    https://itsfoss.com/apt-command-guide/

    https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-guide/index.en.html

    7. Network icon

This is a strange one. In the above snapshot, you can see the network tray icon is showing as connected. That's good, but sometimes when bootup, the tray icon stays as disconnected, even though NetworkManager has connected to the Internet.

    More notes...

Regarding the audio player, have a play with Quod Libet, let me know what you think about the UI. It seems a bit odd to me. I do like Audacious, and what might do is compile the older gtk version.

Feedback is welcome at the forum, for example this thread:

    https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=14632

Please note that you cannot update from an earlier EasyOS. This has to be a brand new download and install to usb-drive. The goal-posts are going to be shifting a lot, so will not be able to use the "update" icon until the final EasyOS 7.0 is released, to be able to update from 7.0 onwards.
