EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.3 released

May 12, 2023 — BarryK

Version 5.2.4 was released on May 4:

The two main news items for 5.3 are ext4 folder encryption changed from fscrypt v1 to v2, and secondly greatly improved Flatpak Installer (Flapi).

The change of fscrypt from v1 to v2 means that the encrypted folders prior to 5.3 will no longer be accessible. For 5.2.3 and earlier, you need to download the 'easy-update' script prior to updating to 5.3, as explained in the above 5.2.4 announcement blog post.

You must do this, otherwise update to 5.3 will break the installation. Though, the problem only applies if you enter a password at bootup and have encrypted folders.

Here are the 5.3 release notes:

Here is a recent post about Flapi, if you would like to read more about it:

Here is a post about fscrypt v2:

If you already have Easy running, just click the "update" icon, after having downloaded 'easy-update' script.

If doing a new install, download the .img file from here:

Feedback welcome here:

So far have only found one bug in 5.3. In EasySetup, "Easy Containers" category, returns "No applications found".

There are some bugs when updating. I updated from 5.2.1, with that new 'easy-update' script, but at reboot it dropped out to a shell in the initrd. This is a minor bug. Type "exit" and bootup will continue.

After bootup, the "apps" and "setup" icons were wrong. The fixes are described in this blog post:

Have fun!
